  • Patent number: 6689857
Abstract: A high density polyethylene (HDPE) film is provided having high-biaxial orieniation. The film includes HDPE having a density of at least about 0.940, and a melt index of from about 0.5 to about 10. The film is stretched in the machine (longitudinal) direction to a degree of from about 5:1 to about 8:1, preferably from about 6:1 to about 7:1. The film is also stretched in the transverse (lateral) direction to a degree of from about 6:1 to about 15:1, preferably from about 9:1 to about 13:1. Preferably, the film has an orientation imbalance, with a higher degree of transverse orientation than machine orientation. Skin layers such as heat seal layers can be provided. Preferably, the film contains one or more layers of a casting promoter material employed to promote casting of a high gauge HDPE sheet subsequently high biaxially oriented to provide the film. The film can also be cavitated, or otherwise modified (e.g., corona-treated, coated, metallized, etc.) to provide films suitable for special applications.

  • Publication number: 20030099851
Abstract: Polyolefin films having excellent barrier and metal adhesion characteristics and methods for producing the same are provided. The polyolefin film structures include a polyolefin core layer having a first and second side, a heat sealable layer adjacent to the first side of the core layer and substantially coextensive therewith, and a high barrier layer adjacent to the second side of the core layer and substantially coextensive therewith. The high barrier layer includes a blend of ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer and nylon. Preferred embodiments of the present invention also provide for a metallized skin layer adjacent to the high barrier layer and substantially coextensive therewith.

  • Patent number: 6534153
Abstract: The present invention relates to a matte surface film comprising: a base layer comprising a polyolefin; and a matte surface layer comprising a blend of high molecular weight high density polyethylene (HMWHD PE) with at least one incompatible polyolefin. The incompatible polyolefin may be ethylene propylene (EP) copolymers, ethylene butylene propylene (EBP) terpolymers or polypropylene (PP) homopolymers, such as metallocene catalyzed isotactic polypropylene (m-iPP) or metallocene catalyzed syndiotatic polypropylene (m-sPP). The matte surface layer may additionally contain a low molecular weight high density polyethylene or a medium molecular weight high density polyethylene. The film possesses an improved matte appearance and may be used for packaging and label applications.

  • Patent number: 6528155
Abstract: A method for producing an opaque polymeric film comprises: (a) extruding a base layer comprising a polymeric matrix and at least one cavitating agent; (b) coextruding at least one additional layer on at least one side of the base layer; (c) cooling the coextruded multi-layer film; and then (d) orienting the film in at least the machine direction (MD); wherein at least said base layer contains a syndiotactic polystyrene polymer, and wherein said syndiotactic polystyrene polymer is in the form of solid, non-hollow particles during the orienting step (d).

  • Patent number: 6228505
Abstract: The present invention is directed to biaxially oriented polymeric films. Specifically, the present invention is directed to biaxially oriented polyethylene films having unidirectional tear characteristics in machine direction and method thereof. The film of the present invention consists of (1) a core layer of medium density polyethylene (MDPE) and optionally a cavitating agent; and (2) at least one skin layer on at least one surface of the core layer. The skin layer is also made from a polyethylene. The core and skin layers coextensively adhere to one another and are biaxially oriented in both machine and traverse directions.
