  • Patent number: 11105197
Abstract: A downhole acoustic transmitter has a piezoelectric transducer, an enclosure in which the piezoelectric transducer is housed, a transducer preload means which applies a selected compressive force against the transducer such that a mechanical preload is applied to the transducer, and an acoustic tuning element which has a first end coupled to the transducer preload means or the transducer, and an open second end. The acoustic tuning element is not coupled to anything but the transducer preload means or transducer, so the transducer preload means effectively has a second open end and thus can maintain the same preload compressive force on the transducer even when the transmitter is subjected to tension and compressive forces during operation.

  • Patent number: 11095399
Abstract: A robust network telemetry repeater system exploits the repeater structure of data propagation and transmission and reception bi-directionality to increase network robustness. For example, multiple perceived receive attempts are created with no additional overhead. The system can be configured whereby nodes “hear” the transmissions of both adjacent and non-adjacent nodes forming implicit acknowledgement (“Acks”), and originating nodes can retransmit until implicit acknowledgments (“Acks”) are “heard,” indicating a successful link relay. Implicit acknowledgment can be applied to bidirectional networks, and bidirectional action can enable all nodes in the network to know the status of all other nodes.

  • Publication number: 20210223066
Abstract: A linear rotary encoder includes a pair of rotational surfaces. A contact belt has a first end coupled to a first rotational surface in the pair and a second end coupled to a second rotational surface in the pair. The contact belt is driven to rotate around the pair of rotational surfaces by a driving force applied to media to move the media from the first end toward the second end. An encoding scale is coupled to an inner surface of the contact belt. A reader is positioned to read the encoding scale as the contact belt rotates around the pair of rotational surfaces. The reader generates an output signal indicating a position of the media based on reading of the encoding scale.

  • Publication number: 20210156246
Abstract: A combined telemetry system that can be used while drilling a wellbore consists of a multi-hop telemetry method and a single-hop telemetry method combined in parallel. The multi-hop and single-hop methods can be operated in parallel, for example, so that each telemetry method caries data concurrently from the Measuring-While-Drilling tool located in the Bottom-Hole-Assembly. The multi-hop and single-hop methods can also be operated in series, for example, so that data from the Measuring-While-Drilling tool located in the Bottom-Hole-Assembly are first carried with the single-hop telemetry method and then transferred to the multi-hop telemetry method at one or more node(s) close to the surface. Preferably, the multi-hop telemetry method can also carry data from along-string sensors. Another combined telemetry system that can be used while drilling a wellbore consists of two single-hop telemetry methods combined in parallel.

Abstract: An antenna assembly includes a radio frequency (RF) connector connected to a first end of a coaxial cable and a wire antenna attached to a second end of the coaxial cable. The wire antenna may be made of a shape memory alloy, such as nitinol. Examples of RF connectors include U.FL, IFEX, WAX, IPX, AMC, MHF and UMCC connectors that allow the wire antenna to be removably attached to a printed circuit board (PCB) of a lighting control device and to avoid hardwiring the antenna to the PCB. The device that includes the antenna assembly may be incorporated into a luminaire for wireless control of the luminaire. The lighting control device may be installed within the luminaire, such that the wire antenna is positioned between a light source and a diffuser. A number of such luminaires may be combined to provide an intelligent lighting system.

  • Publication number: 20210119706
Abstract: Wide aperture optical communications systems and methods are disclosed. A first employs two lens arrays, arranged facing each other, and with one of the MLAs movable relative to the other. A second aspect employs a plurality of electromagnetic radiation capture units positioned under a focusing unit such as a dome, such that incoming electromagnetic radiation incident on the dome is deflected by it, to reach each of the capture units with a different timing and intensity. The profile for the timings and intensities can be determined for a given transmitter using a calibration signal, and the profile is then used to extra data from data signals transmitted by the transmitter.

Abstract: A genetically modified bacterium for excreting fixed nitrogen (in the form of ammonia) is disclosed. The bacterium can be made by deleting at least a portion of the nifL gene of a diazotrophic ?-proteobacterium, and inserting a promoter sequence into the diazotrophic ?-proteobacterium genome that is placed and oriented to direct transcription of the rnf1 gene complex. The resulting genetically modified bacterium excretes ammonia constitutively and at a greater rate than the wild type bacterium, and can be used to make biofertilizers to stimulate plant growth. The biofertilizers may contain a culture of the bacteria, or a co-culture of the bacteria and a mycorrhizal fungus.
