  • Publication number: 20080290141
Abstract: This invention discloses a method, using pure niobium as a transient liquid reactive braze material, for fabrication of cellular or honeycomb structures, wire space-frames or other sparse builtup structures or discrete articles using Nitinol (near equiatomic titanium-nickel alloy) and related shape-memory and superelastic alloys. Nitinol shape memory alloys (SMAs), acquired in a form such as corrugated sheet, discrete tubes or wires, may be joined together using the newly discovered technique. Pure niobium when brought into contact with Nitinol at elevated temperature, liquefies at temperatures below the melting point and flows readily into capillary spaces between the elements to be joined, thus forming a strong joint. A series of diagrams of the interface at various stages of brazing is illustrated by FIG. 10.

  • Patent number: 7355163
Abstract: An optical sensing system uses light scattered from a sensing fibre to sense conditions along the fibre, and has a receiver with a frequency to amplitude converter to obtain a frequency of a Brillouin component of the received scattered light, to deduce the conditions. This converter can avoid time consuming scanning of frequencies to obtain the Brillouin frequency spectrum, and avoids the heavy processing load of deducing a peak or average frequency from the spectrum. The converter can be implemented in the optical domain using a grating or interferometer, or in the electrical domain using a diplexer or electrical interferometer. It can generate complementary signals, having opposite signs, a ratio of these signals representing the frequency. This can avoid sensitivity to amplitude changes in the received scattered signals and provide common mode rejection of noise.

  • Patent number: 7264673
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of forming a shaped article having a matrix that contains sintered fly ash. The method comprises the step of blending fly ash together with water to produce a fly ash dough. The water is added in excess of that which is absorbed by the fly ash so that the dough contains free water so as to be in at least a partially fluid state. The method also comprises the steps of forming a green article in a desired shape from the fly ash dough, and removing at least a portion of the free water from the fly ash dough during and/or after forming of the green article. The green article is subsequently fired so that the shaped article is hardened by sintering its fly ash matrix. The present invention also provides a building element having a matrix of sintered fly ash.

  • Patent number: 7164309
Abstract: A voltage multiplier circuit includes a control circuit and a first voltage multiplier stage. The control circuit receives a power supply voltage and a reference voltage and provides a first output voltage being the difference between a first selected voltage and the power supply voltage where the first selected voltage is a function of the reference voltage and is independent of variations in the power supply voltage. The first voltage multiplier stage receives the first output voltage and a clock voltage signal having a clock voltage value and provides a second output voltage being the sum of the first output voltage and the clock voltage value. When the clock voltage value is equal to the power supply voltage, the second output voltage of the first voltage multiplier stage is the first selected voltage independent of any power supply voltage variations.
