    Abstract: Some embodiments relate to an apparatus for holding a workpiece under tension while one or more operations are performed on the workpiece, the apparatus comprising: a frame; a first spindle rotatably coupled to the frame; a first coupler configured to couple the first spindle to a first end of the workpiece; a second spindle rotatably coupled to the frame; and a second coupler configured to couple the second spindle to a second end of the workpiece; wherein a distance between the first and second couplers is adjustable to hold the workpiece under tension between the couplers while the one or more operations are performed, and wherein the workpiece can be rotated with the couplers relative to the frame about a common axis of rotation extending between the couplers. Some embodiments relate to a system comprising a controller for controlling rotation of the workpiece. Embodiments also relate to processes comprising holding a workpiece under tension while performing one or more operations on the workpiece.

The abrasion-resistant material comprises a macro-composite material including abrasion-resistant particles which are arranged in a substantially repeating, engineered configuration infiltrated with a matrix of a second metal, the particles having a hardness greater than that of the second metal. A cooling element for a metallurgical furnace has a body comprised of the first metal, the body having a facing layer comprising the abrasion-resistant material. A method comprises: positioning the engineered configuration of abrasion-resistant particles in a mold cavity, the engineered configuration located in an area of the mold cavity to define the facing layer; and introducing molten metal into the cavity, the molten metal comprising the first metal of the cooling element body.

The clip has a connecting wall with respective first and second side walls extending from the connecting wall, and first and second tabs extending inwardly respectively from the first and second side walls, the threaded bolt being inserted through an opening in the connecting wall of the clip, and the nut being threaded onto the bolt. When the lamp assembly is in a pre-compressed position, the nut is spaced away from the stops, and, when the lamp assembly is in a compressed position, at least one of the nut and the connecting wall contacts the stops.

    Abstract: A brake actuator has a housing containing tappets operable by a cam to apply brake shoes against a rotary brake drum. The housing defines a cavity to which lubricant is admitted. A flexible element which is not compressed at the maximum positive system lubricant pressure and is disposed within the cavity and subject to lubricant pressure. The element is movable during outward movement of the tappets to compensate for any increase in volume of the cavity caused by tappet outward movement. This avoids the occurrence of negative pressure in the cavity.

The return spring is anchored relative to the backing plate in such a way that it cannot move circumferentially or axially but its flexing action is not interferred with. The cooperation of the return spring with the brake shoe and the mounting of brake shoes holds the brake shoes parallel to the backing plate and facilitates servicing.

    Abstract: An automatic adjuster comprises a transmission member, suitably a crown wheel, and thrust assemblies, of which the effective lengths are adjustable to adjust the spacing between a pair of shoe-ends, and the crown wheel is coupled to a brake-applying cam through a lost-motion connection, and a clutch. In a brake-applying mode the transmission mechanism is operative to increase the effective lengths of the thrust assemblies after the lost-motion has been taken up and until a critical point is reached at which the clutch slips in one direction. An inhibit mechanism is incorporated for limiting movement of the crown wheel in the opposite brake release mode until any previous excess movement of the crown wheel in the brake-applying mode has been accommodated by slippage of the clutch in the opposite direction.

    Abstract: A drum-type brake and actuating system therefor comprised of a camshaft, cam and actuator mechanism that are contained within an actuator housing and a tubular shaft which journals the camshaft. A lubricant fitting permits lubricant to be introduced into both the tubular member and the actuator housing. In addition, an automatic adjuster is contained within an adjuster housing which communicates with the actuator housing and a pressure responsive valve that permits lubricant introduced through a grease fitting to be discharged from the adjuster housing. An expandable member is contained within the actuator housing for compensating for effective volume variations and precluding the exhaust of lubicant and the introduction of air during such changes.
