Patent number: 10725074Abstract: A voltage indicator and a method for its use in detecting and indicating the presence of single-phase AC voltage in an electrical power cord. The voltage indicator includes an electronic display, capacitor plate elements connected electrically to the electronic display so as to couple the voltage indicator capacitively to the electrical power cord when alternating current voltage is present, and diodes that act as a rectifier, between one of the capacitor plate elements and the electronic display device. Capacitive coupling develops electrical current through the voltage indicator and energizes the display device when alternating line current voltage is present in the power cord. The voltage indicator is electrically insulated from the power cord it monitors by the usual insulation on the power cord or cable.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 2018Date of Patent: July 28, 2020Inventor: John Atherton

Publication number: 20080307553Abstract: A composite material comprising a multitude of masses and fibers supported on a flexible substrate arranged in a manner to absorb energy from a ballistic projectile and thereby protect persons or property from ballistic injury or damage. An array of small, tough disc-like masses are suspended in a three dimensional cradle of high-tensile elastomeric fibers such that energy from an incoming ballistic projectile is first imparted to one or more masses and the motion of the masses are restrained by tensile strain of elastomeric fibers substantially in the direction of travel of the incoming projectile. The projectile is eventually decelerated to harmless velocity through a combination of transfer of momentum to the masses and the elastic and plastic tensile deformation of the fibers.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 12, 2007Publication date: December 18, 2008Applicant: ENERGY SCIENCE LLCInventors: Terance Jbeili, Christopher Charles Payton, Eric John Atherton

Publication number: 20050124824Abstract: A process for the preparation of a compound of formula (I): wherein Ar represents an optionally substituted aromatic carbocycle or heterocycle, and R1 and R2 independently represent hydrogen, C1-10alkyl, C(O)C1-10alkyl or optionally substituted aryl provided that R1 and R2 are not both hydrogen which process comprises reacting together a compound of formula (II): Ar—X??(II) wherein Ar is as defined in relation to formula (I) and X represents a leaving group with a a compound of formula (III) wherein R1 and R2 are as defined in relation to formula (I) under aqueous conditions in the presence of a Pd (II) salt, a ligand and a Group I or Group II metal hydroxide base at a pH greater than 7. Compounds of formula (I) may be hydrolysed to the corresponding hydrazine.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 2, 2002Publication date: June 9, 2005Inventors: Andrew Blacker, David Dodman, David Jackson, Jan Fielden, John Atherton

Patent number: 6761205Abstract: A flow device for location within an aperture (A) to regulate flow through the aperture on a path from a first location (5) on one side of the aperture to a second location (6) on the other side of the aperture wherein there is provided a barrier (1) defined by a sequence of vertical elements; device for driving the sequence of elements, so that the barrier serves to generate a predetermined wave form along the path such that the barrier serves to create in sequence: an entry region for occupation by at least one individual which entry region is initially open toward the one side of the aperture but isolated from the other side of the aperture; a traversing region (R) on the path generated from the entry region by progressive movement of the barrier, and an exit region open towards the other side of the aperture but isolated form the one side.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 2002Date of Patent: July 13, 2004Inventor: Eric John Atherton

Patent number: 6747178Abstract: According to the present invention there is provided a method of carrying out a chemical reaction between at least two fluids, the method comprising providing respective flow paths for the at least two fluids, said flow paths communicating with each other in a region in which the at least two fluids may contact each other, and flowing the at least two fluids along said flow paths such that in said region the at least two fluids contact each other and a chemical reaction occurs between them, said region having a width perpendicular to the direction of flow in the range 10-10,000 micrometers. It has been found that using a so-called “microreactor”, that is a reactor having dimensions perpendicular to the flow direction of less than 10,000 micrometers, according to the present method, improved control over a fluid chemical reaction can be achieved, which can result in significant improvements in reaction product yield and/or purity, as well as other benefits.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 2000Date of Patent: June 8, 2004Assignee: British Nuclear Fuels plcInventors: Paul Harston, Malcolm John Atherton, Robert G.
