  • Patent number: 4427572
Abstract: A calcium soap is prepared by saponifying an organic carboxylic acid having from 6 to 24 carbon atoms in the molecule, its ester or mixtures thereof with calcium hydroxide in a liquid reaction medium comprising a dipolar aprotic solvent, separating the calcium soap from the reaction medium and removing excess of the solvent from the calcium soap. The calcium soap so produced is in the form of a dry finely divided powder which can, for example, be employed in the manufacture of industrial lubricants.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 21, 1981
Date of Patent: January 24, 1984
    Assignee: Lever Brothers Company
Inventors: John B. Akers, Jane A. Littler, David C. Peters
  • Patent number: 4337209
Abstract: An alkali metal salt of an organic carboxylic acid, i.e. a soap, is prepared by saponifying the corresponding organic carboxylic acid, its ester or mixtures thereof with a concentrated aqueous solution of alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of an inorganic salt, in a liquid reaction medium comprising acetone, separating the organic salt from the reaction medium and removing excess acetone from the organic salt. The inorganic salt, i.e. soap, so produced is in the form of a dry finely divided powder.

Inventors: John B. Akers, Jane A. Littler, David C. Peters
  • Patent number: 4259251
Abstract: A process for the production of fatty acid soaps from sludge, especially sewage sludge, comprises extracting sludge having a solids content of at least 15% by weight with a non-polar solvent to provide an extract containing fatty matter, and subsequently saponifying the fatty matter in the presence of a dipolar aprotic solvent having a dielectric constant of at least 15 to produce fatty acid soaps.
