    Abstract: A method of treating a multifilament bundle of pitch fibers, such as yarn or tow, to prepare such multifilament bundle for further processing which comprises applying to the fibers thereof an aqueous finishing composition comprising a dispersion of graphite or carbon black in water in which is dissolved a water-soluble surfactant which is also capable of functioning as an oxidizing agent. The finishing composition serves as both a size for the fiber bundle and as a thermosetting aid during infusibilization of the fibers.
