  • Patent number: 5539597
Abstract: A pivot assembly for an actuator arm of a disk drive is disclosed. The housing of the actuator arm is supported on a shaft by two or more bearings. An assembly load is applied to the housing relative to the shaft such that the assembly load is carried by only one of the bearings. The axial location of the housing relative to the shaft with the assembly load applied is observed as a reference location. The assembly load is removed. One of the races of a bearing is moved until the housing returns to the reference location. In this state the bearings have a preload which is equal to the assembly load. The preload can be achieved with none of the races being loose-fit, and there is no need for adhesive.

  • Patent number: 5491598
Abstract: A bearing assembly supports an actuator arm for rotation about an axis in a disc drive. The bearing assembly includes a shaft generally defining the axis. A plurality of bearings are disposed about the shaft. A sleeve is coupled to the bearings for rotation about the shaft, and a damper is coupled to the sleeve. The damper damps rotary actuator vibrations.

  • Patent number: 5315465
Abstract: A pivot mechanism for a rotary actuator in a disc drive data storage device comprising a pivot shaft having a shoulder near one end thereof, the pivot shaft disposed in a central bore of an actuator body having a medially disposed narrow section spatially separating upper and lower bearing assemblies supported on the pivot shaft. Tolerance rings are disposed between the bearing assemblies and the actuator body, and a preloading resilient member biases the bearing assemblies to abut against the narrow section and the shoulder on the pivot shaft. Preferably, adhesive bonds the upper bearing assembly to the pivot shaft once preloading is achieved.

  • Patent number: 5231556
Abstract: A self-holding latch assembly for a disc drive storage device to alternately lock or unlock the actuator of the disc drive storage device, the latch assembly including a magnet coil means supported in a predetermined spatial relationship to the actuator for alternately providing magnetic attraction to a first limit stop or to a second limit stop in response to current flow therethrough. A magnet latch assembly is pivotally supported by the magnet coil means and is alternately attracted to the first limit stop or to the second limit stop, the magnet latch assembly having engagement with the actuator for locking same in one such position, and being in clearing relationship to the actuator in the other stable position.

  • Patent number: 4751594
Abstract: A vent cap has a long, narrow air communication passage covering the vent outlet of a sealed disk drive. The passage reduces diffusion of water vapor into the disk drive.
