Patent number: 5255969Abstract: The operating components of a forced air furnace are disposed within a double-walled cabinet structure having inner and outer metal walls which define therebetween an insulating air space that replaces the fibrous insulation normally adhered to the interior surface of furnace cabinetry. The illustrated cabinet structure representatively comprises a coil housing positioned atop a return housing. Each housing is formed from initially flat inner and outer sheet metal panels having rectangular configurations and various transverse projections thereon which permit the panels to be nested in a spaced apart, laterally facing relationship. Opposite end portions of the nested panels are then transversely bent in the same direction to form from the nested panels three interconnected sides of the housing, and the outer ends of the bent panel structure are secured together by elongated metal joining members extended across the resulting open fourth side of the housing.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 1992Date of Patent: October 26, 1993Assignee: Rheem Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Jimmy L. Cox, John B. Greenfield, Kendall L. Ross

Patent number: 5228197Abstract: Using a series of identically sized, single row, single circuit refrigerant coil modules, fin/tube refrigerant coils of different nominal air conditioning tonnages are constructed by arranging different numbers of the identically sized modules in accordion-pleated orientations, with each modular coil having the same depth in the direction of intended air flow across the coil. Compared to conventional "A" coils used on the indoor side of air conditioning circuits, these accordion-pleated modular coils are more compact in the air flow direction, provide more coil surface area, permit lower coil face velocities with higher fin density, and significantly reduce the overall coil manufacturing costs since only one size of coil slab needs to be fabricated and inventoried to later assemble refrigerant coils of widely varying nominal air conditioning tonnages.Type: GrantFiled: March 25, 1992Date of Patent: July 20, 1993Assignee: Rheem Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Jimmy L. Cox, John B. Greenfield, Kendall L. Ross

Patent number: 4571952Abstract: A solar and convection assisted heat pump for a building includes an oversized outdoor coil having a surface area at least thirty times greater than the surface area of the indoor coil. Additionally, the outdoor coil is mounted to maximize simultaneous exposure to the sun, exposure to the prevailing wind flow, and natural convective air flow over the panel heat exchanger.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1983Date of Patent: February 25, 1986Assignee: Rheem Manufacturing CompanyInventor: John B. Patent number: 4171937Abstract: An improved grill panel and motor mount assembly for fans and fan motors includes a plurality of flexible cables connecting the end plates of the motor housing with a mounting bracket attached to a louvered panel. The cables retain the blower motor in proper position while providing sufficient flexibility to damp out vibrations which occur due to the operation of the fan motor. The combination sheet metal air discharge grill and fan motor mount assembly includes sectors of louvers arranged about a center support section of the grill panel.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 1977Date of Patent: October 23, 1979Assignee: Rheem Manufacturing CompanyInventor: John B. Patent number: 4043708Abstract: An improved motor mount assembly for fan motors includes a plurality of flexible cables connecting the end plates of the motor housing with a mounting bracket. The motor mount assembly may be used in combination with a bladed fan or a blower wheel fan. The cables retain the blower motor in proper position while providing sufficient flexibility to damp out vibrations which occur due to the operation of the fan motor. A combination sheet metal air discharge grill and fan motor mount assembly is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 1976Date of Patent: August 23, 1977Assignee: Rheem Manufacturing CompanyInventor: John B.
