A robot includes a speech generating unit that generates speech and a speech output unit that outputs the generated speech. The robot outputs speech generated by the robot rather than outputting speech prepared in advance. Because of this, speech that is in accordance with sensor information can be generated and output, or speech unique to the robot can be generated and output.
