  • Publication number: 20070029207
Abstract: This invention discloses a metal product that is suitable for a forming process. By anodizing an oxide layer onto at least one surface of the metal product, the total amount of lubricant that is applied onto the metal product prior to being formed is reduced or eliminated. This invention also discloses a method of generating such an oxide layer onto the metal product.

  • Patent number: 4781848
Abstract: A metalworking lubricant comprising an oil-in-water microemulsion and containing about 1-30 wt % natural or synthetic oil; about 0.5-30 wt % of a water-soluble surfactant, preferably a nonionic surfactant; about 1-20 wt % of an organic consurfactant, preferably 1,2-octanediol; and about 45-97.5 wt % water containing less than about 1 wt % dissolved inorganic salts. The lubricant is suitable for various metalworking methods, including hot rolling and cold rolling of aluminum and aluminum alloys.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 21, 1987
Date of Patent: November 1, 1988
    Assignee: Aluminum Company of America
Inventors: Girma Biresaw, Ronald A. Reich, John Bohaychick, Ronald P. Festa
  • Patent number: 4775418
Abstract: A parting composition useful for continuously casting aluminum and aluminum alloys and comprising glycerol trioleate and a vegetable oil. Mixtures of glycerol trioleate with castor oil have superior properties compared with parting compositions previously used for continuous ingot casting.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 6, 1986
Date of Patent: October 4, 1988
    Assignee: Aluminum Company of America
Inventors: Joseph T. Laemmle, John Bohaychick, Willie Lansdale
  • Patent number: 4670168
Abstract: An aqueous metalworking composition comprising about 2-20 wt % of a water-soluble polyglycol, about 0.6-12 wt % of a neutralized or partially neutralized alkyl or alkenyl substituted succinic acid, and water. The composition is especially suitable for metalworking operations such as cutting, grinding, turning, milling, and drilling on aluminum and aluminum alloys.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 1, 1986
Date of Patent: June 2, 1987
    Assignee: Aluminum Company of America
Inventors: Joseph T. Laemmle, John Bohaychick
  • Patent number: 4634469
Abstract: A parting composition useful for continuously casting aluminum and aluminum alloys and comprising glycerol trioleate, castor oil and a copper corrosion inhibitor. The parting composition of the invention has superior properties compared with parting compositions previously used for continuous ingot casting. The copper corrosion inhibitor prevents deterioration around openings in oil injection rings made from copper.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 21, 1985
Date of Patent: January 6, 1987
    Assignee: Aluminum Company of America
Inventors: Joseph T. Laemmle, John Bohaychick, Willie Lansdale
  • Patent number: 4522250
Abstract: A process for continuously casting aluminum and aluminum alloys using a parting composition comprising glycerol trioleate. Both glycerol trioleate and mixtures of glycerol trioleate with castor oil have superior properties compared with parting compositions previously used for continuous ingot casting.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 29, 1982
Date of Patent: June 11, 1985
    Assignee: Aluminum Company of America

  • Patent number: 4517105
Abstract: A metalworking lubricant composition comprising a novel substituted diester of malonic acid having the general formulaR.sub.1 R.sub.2 C(COOR.sub.3)(COOR.sub.4)wherein R.sub.1 is a C.sub.8 -C.sub.18 linear alkyl group or a C.sub.8 -C.sub.30 branched alkyl group or a C.sub.8 -C.sub.30 alkyl aryl group; R.sub.2 is H or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 linear alkyl group or a C.sub.8 -C.sub.30 branched alkyl group or a C.sub.8 -C.sub.30 alkyl aryl group; and R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 linear or branched alkyl groups. The substituted malonic diester may be used either in neat form or as an additive to mineral oil. The metalworking lubricant composition of the invention imparts enhanced lubricity and wear resistance to the surfaces of metals such as aluminum and aluminum alloys.
