Patent number: 6535281Abstract: A method and an apparatus for scanning a vehicle wheel, wherein a location on the wheel is sensed by means of a light beam emitted by a light source and is reflected to a position-sensitive receiver. The spacing of the sensed location relative to a reference location is measured from the directions of the emitted beam and the reflected beam. The light source and the position-sensitive receiver are synchronously pivoted about a common axis by means of a rotary drive including a stepping motor for successive measurement steps. A rotary angle sensor supplies signals proportional to the rotary position of the stepping motor to an evaluation system.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 2001Date of Patent: March 18, 2003Assignee: Snap-On Deutschland Holding GmbHInventors: Paul Conheady, John Brennan, Helen Lowe

Patent number: 6092067Abstract: A system for selectively recording a data structure where one or more external program modules are registered. A group of important actions is selected corresponding to both internal program modules and registered external program modules. The system determines if an action associated with one of the internal program modules or one of the registered external program modules has occurred. If so, the system determines if the action is one of the important actions. If the action is an important action, then information associated with the important action is placed into data fields of a data structure. The data structure containing the information is stored in computer memory. The data structure is maintained within a central container or folder in memory, along with previously recorded data structures. The data structure can be automatically deleted after a predetermined threshold of time.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 1996Date of Patent: July 18, 2000Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Robert Marcus Girling, Jennifer Ruth Mead, Nicholas Paul Duane, Se-Wai Lee, David John Brennan, Eric Van Doren, Michael Gene Leu

Patent number: 5632025Abstract: A method for preventing deadlock due to the need for data exclusivity when performing forced atomic instructions in a multi-level cache in a multi-processor system. The system determines whether an aligned multi-byte word in which the data of a forced atomic instruction, such as an integer store operation, is exclusive in a first level cache. If so, the forced atomic instruction is allowed to enter a second level cache pipeline. If not, the forced atomic instruction is prevented from entering the second level cache pipeline and a cache miss and fill operation is initiated to cause the aligned word to be exclusive in the first level cache.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 1996Date of Patent: May 20, 1997Assignee: Silicon Graphics, Inc.Inventors: Joseph P. Bratt, John Brennan, Peter Y. T. Hsu, William A. Huffman, Joseph T. Scanlon, Steve Ciavaglia

Patent number: 5572704Abstract: A method for preventing data loss and deadlock in a multi-processor computer system wherein at least one processor in the computer system includes a split-level cache. The split-level cache has a byte-writable first-level and a word-writable second level. The method monitors the second level cache to determine if a forced atomic (FA) instruction is in a second level cache pipeline. If an FA instruction is determined to be in the second level cache pipeline, then interventions to the second level cache are delayed until the FA instruction exits the second level cache pipeline. In this manner data written by operation of cache memory access instruction that cause the interventions is not destroyed by the execution of the FA instruction, thereby preventing data loss. The method also monitors the second level cache pipeline to determine if a possible miss (PM) instruction is in the second level cache pipeline.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1993Date of Patent: November 5, 1996Assignee: Silicon Graphics, Inc.Inventors: Joseph P. Bratt, John Brennan, Peter Y. Hsu, William A. Huffman, Joseph T. Scanlon, Steve Ciavagia

Patent number: 5537538Abstract: A processor system that is switchable between a normal mode of operation without precise floating point exceptions and a debug mode of operation with precise floating point exceptions. The processor system includes a dispatch for dispatching integer and floating point instructions, an integer unit having a multi-stage integer pipeline for executing the integer instructions, and a floating point unit having a multi-stage floating point pipeline for executing the floating point instructions. The system begins operation in the normal mode, and upon receipt of an instruction to "switch to debug mode," the processor switches to the debug mode of operation with precise exceptions. In the debug mode, once a floating point instruction has been dispatched, all other instructions are prevented from being committed until the system determines whether the floating point instruction generates an exception. Thus, permitting the system to signal precise exceptions when not in the normal mode.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1993Date of Patent: July 16, 1996Assignee: Silicon Graphics, Inc.Inventors: Joseph P. Bratt, John Brennan, Peter Y. Hsu, Chandra S. Joshi, William A. Huffman, Monica R. Nofal, Paul Rodman, Joseph T. Scanlon, Man K. Tang

Patent number: 5527909Abstract: The present invention relates a precursor metal organic compound of the formula:2-NR-Q-M-Awherein M is selected from the Group IIb elements of Zinc, Cadmium, of Mercury;A is selected from R: Amide, alkyl having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, aryl, substituted aryl, or -Q'-2-NR'L2 wherein L is selected from nothing or a Lewis base ligand,Q and Q' are each independently selected from Group VIa elements of sulfur, selenium, or tellurium; and2-NR and 2-NR" are each independently selected from N-heterocyclic aryl or its derivatives. In a preferred embodiment, A is -Q'-2-NR' and L is nothing, especially wherein 2-NR=2-NR', Q=Q'. Methods of producing these compounds are also disclosed. These precursor materials provide in a single compound the binary, tertiary, or quaternary metals in a ratio to each other that is controllable by a discerning choice of metal atoms and organic constituents. The metal alloys are useful in a variety of electronic applications, particularly in semiconductors.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 1994Date of Patent: June 18, 1996Assignee: Rutgers, The State University of New JerseyInventors: John Brennan, Yifeng Cheng

Patent number: 5510934Abstract: A split level cache memory system for a data processor includes a single chip integer unit, an army processor such as a floating point unit, an external main memory and a split level cache. The split level cache includes an on-chip, fast local cache with low latency for use by the integer unit for loads and stores of integer and address data and an off-chip, pipelined global cache for storing arrays of data such as floating point data for use by the array processor and integer and address data for refilling the local cache. Coherence between the local cache and global cache is maintained by writing through to the global cache during integer stores. Local cache words are invalidated when data is written to the global cache during an army processor store.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1993Date of Patent: April 23, 1996Assignee: Silicon Graphics, Inc.Inventors: John Brennan, Peter Y. Hsu, William A. Huffman, Paul Rodman, Joseph T. Scanlon, Man K. Tang, Steve J. Ciavaglia
