  • Publication number: 20070190527
Abstract: The instant invention is drawn to the identification and use of information regarding one or more porcine leptin receptor (pLEPR) gene polymorphisms as a marker to identify animals to serve as breeding stock for enhanced pork production. One particular polymorphism of pLEPR gene results in either a methionine or a threonine amino acid residue at position 69 of the protein that the pLEPR genes encodes. The pLEPR gene is located on porcine chromosone 6 and have been shown to be associated with determination of daily feed intake, among other factors.

  • Publication number: 20070105107
Abstract: The invention provides methodologies for improved molecular genetic analysis of individual animals and animal populations. The invention includes methods and systems for identifying those animals in a population that are most likely to heritably pass on desirable traits. Provided are means for evaluating the estimated breeding values and increasing the average genetic merit for animals in a population. For each trait, the instant invention provides methods for evaluating the relative effect of one or more quantitative trait loci (QTL) and three or more molecular genetic markers for each QTL The relationship between these various markers and the pre-selected trait and QTL is calculated, along with the contribution of other factors such as pedigree and known measures with respect to quantitative trait, and these data are used to calculate estimated breeding values for the animals in the herd and to rank the animals according to these estimated breeding values.

  • Patent number: 6407383
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and a device for fluorescence measurement of oil residues in water. The core of the invention is to use a powerful, narrow-band excimer lamp to excite intensive fluorescence radiation to detect the latter with a photodiode or the like, and to determine the oil concentration therefrom. The excimer lamp can be designed as a flat radiator a hollow cylindrical inner radiator or a tubular radiator, and can be combined with a through-flow or free fall measuring cell. The excimer lamp is advantageously operated in a pulsed or modulated fashion, the fluorescence radiation is measured at a right angle to the exciting radiation, the emitted and/or transmitted exciting light is monitored with the detectors, and a redundant measuring arrangement with a plurality of excimer lamps and fluorescence detectors is provided. The sensor is distinguished by reliability, freedom from maintenance and a long service life.

  • Patent number: 5220284
Abstract: In a method and a device for measuring the concentration of particles present in a gas, in which a gas stream is guided past a UV light source, the particles are ionized and filtered out and the resulting ionic current is measured, the gas flow required is produced by thermal convection using an internal or external heat source. A suitable internal heat source in this context is, for example, the UV lamp (2) itself, which heats the gas via a radiation absorber (5). The elimination of a mechanical pump reduces the space requirement, power consumption and susceptibility to faults of the measuring arrangement.
