Abstract: A rewinding apparatus is configured to accommodate linerless labels. The apparatus includes a thermal printer for processing an unprinted roll of labels, a rewinder disposed in the vicinity of the thermal printer for rewinding the printed roll after the unprinted roll is processed by the thermal printer, and a base plate supporting the rewinder to position the rewinder in a predetermined position relative to the thermal printer. With linerless labels, the roll of processed labels is wound spaced from a rewinder main body to avoid catching the media adhesive on a side guide, thereby preventing bubbles and wrinkles from being induced in the rewound roll.

Abstract: An apparatus and method provide for the alternate manufacture of permanent adhesive or repositional linerless labels utilizing the same equipment. Indicia is applied such as by using an intelligent imaging system by at least one print station. With repositional labels, a tie coat is applied and dried, whereas with permanent labels a barrier coating is applied. Coating stations apply a repositional adhesive and release coat in the construction of repositional adhesive labels. The coating station is followed by a dryer and chill rolls. In the construction of permanent adhesive labels a coating station for applying a release coat and a release coat curing station, as well as permanent adhesive application station, are also provided. Changeover time from the manufacture of one type of label to the other is short.

Abstract: Labels are provided with sequential numbers which are important in a number of different applications including whether or not there are enough labels left on a roll to perform various operations on the roll. Linerless labels in a spiral roll include an innermost label and an outermost label. Each label includes a substrate with an inner face primarily coated with pressure sensitive adhesive and an outer face coated with release material. The sequential numbers are typically unobtrusive, and are applied to one or both of the inner and outer faces, preferably on the substrate before the coatings are applied. Desirably the innermost label contains the lowest number (typically zero or one) and the outermost the highest. Various pattern coatings can be applied to the substrate, particularly for the adhesive, depending upon the particular application, including at the interface between labels to make them easier to cut at the interface without the blade sticking to adhesive.

Abstract: An easily removable label for use in connection with a container to be recycled (e.g. bottle or can). The label has first and second faces. Indicia is provided on the first face and a coating of repositionable adhesive is applied to the second face. The label is also provided with leading and trailing edges which cooperate to form an overlapping area with permanent adhesive which secures one face of the label to the other while at the same time precluding contact of the permanent adhesive with the container. The label may be provided with a perforation line adjacent the overlapping area so that the label may be conveniently separated from the container. The face of the label may be coated with permanent pressure sensitive adhesive release material, and a number of labels provided in a pad. The label provides a lasting adhesion between the container and the label but yet will not leave any significant residue of permanent adhesive once the label is removed.

Abstract: A dispenser dispenses linerless labels in a web from a roll. The dispenser includes a housing with a shaft in the housing for receipt of the core of a roll of labels mounting them for rotation about an axis. First and second substantially planar guide surfaces guide movement of the labels away from the shaft in a plane substantially parallel to a plane containing the axis of rotation, and first and second rollers are mounted at the end of the guide surfaces for rotation about axes parallel to the axis of rotation of the roll. Each roller may comprise a stationary rod with a freewheeling tube over the rod. The labels are maintained taut during dispensing to assist the process of one label being stripped from another. The dispenser is used in a method of dispensing linerless quadrate pressure sensitive adhesive labels by pulling the labels between the rollers and alternately breaking them over the first roller, and then the second roller, to strip each label from its trailing label.

Abstract: A label is used to seal a package and provide an indication that an end edge of the package has been opened, while also allowing resealing of the package end edge. The label comprises a substrate with top and bottom faces and first and second parallel edges, with indicia (such as price per unit weight, weight, and total price indicia) imaged on the top face. A perforation generally bisects the substrate into generally equally-sized first and second portions, the perforation extending generally transverse to the first and second edges. On the bottom face of the first portion is permanent adhesive (e.g., pressure sensitive), while on the bottom face of the second portion is repositional adhesive. To open the package one tears along the perforation line to detach the second portion of the label from the package, and then tears the first label portion at the package end edge. To reseal the end edge, one places the second label portion over the end edge, the repositional adhesive holding it in place.

Abstract: Easily removable labels, which are still permanently placed except when it is desired to remove them, are associated with bottles, cans, or like containers. Two different configurations of the labels are provided. In the first configuration a roll of labels is provided with permanent adhesive strips along the edge of each label being in shingled overlapped engagement with the permanent adhesive release coat of an adjacent label. In a second construction a pad of labels is provided with two different types of labels, each type having spaced strips of permanent adhesive along one edge of each of the top and bottom faces, which are staggered with respect to like strips along the edges of the second type of labels in the pad, the types of labels alternating in the pad, and permanent adhesive release coat material being provided in the spaces between the strips of material.
