  • Patent number: 8403334
Abstract: A piston ring assembly includes a ring or rail defining a seal surface configured to seal against a piston bore surface of an engine. The seal surface defines a radially outer periphery. The oil control rail assembly further includes two positioning rings. A first one of the positioning rings is disposed axially above the oil control rail and a second one of the positioning rings is disposed axially below the oil control rail. Each of the positioning rings defines an outermost periphery of the positioning ring that is disposed radially inward with respect to the seal surface of the oil control rail. The outermost peripheries of the positioning rings thus generally do not contact a bore surface that is contacted by the seal surface of the oil control rail.

  • Patent number: 8047123
Abstract: A piston assembly for an internal combustion engine is provided, including a piston and at least one insert. The piston includes an annular recess, a first surface, a ring belt and a skirt. The annular recess is located between the ring belt and the skirt. The insert may include a longitudinal portion and one or more opposing arms. The insert may be configured to be coupled with the piston. The arm(s) may extend laterally from the longitudinal portion and may be configured to abut the skirt, thereby orienting the insert relative to the piston. The insert may be disposed along the first surface, and aligned with the piston skirt such that the arms of the insert form a circumference about the piston skirt. The arms may at least partially enclose the annular recess at the piston skirt.

  • Patent number: 7997185
Abstract: A piston has a body with a first circumferentially disposed groove. A first ring is movably disposed within the first groove. The first ring defines an inner circumferential groove. A blocking ring is at least partially located in the groove of the first ring and the groove of the piston. One or more vent passages may connect a first volume in the piston to a second volume outside the piston.

  • Patent number: 7017914
Abstract: A piston assembly having a piston and a piston ring. The ring mates to the piston in a groove on the outer surface of the piston. The ring includes two side walls that connect between inner and outer peripheral walls. The side walls converge outwardly at different angles from the inner peripheral wall to the outer peripheral wall. The angles are different to produce a twist feature of the ring within the piston groove to generate a better seal by the ring. The groove of the piston is generally tapered and has top and bottom walls converging at angles approximately equal to the angles of the side walls of the ring. A method of manufacturing the piston assembly includes forming first and second side walls having first and second angles by outwardly converging from the inner peripheral wall to the outer peripheral wall.

  • Patent number: 5901963
Abstract: A piston ring having a keystone shape and an orientation feature on one of its surfaces for ensuring proper orientation of the ring during installation. The piston ring preferably has an outer peripheral surface that includes a sealing land with a nitride hardened surface to resist wear during the service life of the piston ring. A tapered surface is also provided on the outer peripheral surface adjacent to the sealing land.

  • Patent number: 5794941
Abstract: An improved piston ring assembly comprises a double-offset expander spring and a piston ring. The expander spring has a first wave portion that is continuously engaged in an annular groove of a piston body, the wave portion having an axial extent that is nearly identical to that of the groove. The spring also has a second wave portion with an axial extent less than that of the first wave portion. The second wave portion is adapted to engage a mating slot of the piston ring. The expander spring, rather than the piston ring, is primarily relied upon to engage the groove of the piston body to eliminate assembly slippage and provide axial centering. Thus, the radial thickness of the piston ring may be greatly reduced to improve conformability and reduce oil consumption.
