  • Patent number: 4778744
Abstract: A method for substantially increasing the refractive index change induced in porous glass through metal oxide deposition by photolysis of organometallic compounds present therein, according to which the photolyzed glass is re-impregnated with additional organometallic compounds which undergo decomposition reactions catalyzed by the photolyzed organometallics or oxides resulting from the initial photolysis step. Enhancements of ten times the original refractive index change are attainable.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 21, 1986
Date of Patent: October 18, 1988
    Assignee: Corning Glass Works
Inventors: Nicholas F. Borrelli, John C. Luong, Paul A. Sachenik
  • Patent number: 4561872
Abstract: In the process of making a glass or ceramic article by the preparation of a non-aqueous oxide suspension of submicron oxide particles which is thereafter cast into a configuration for the product, gelled, dried, and fired to provide the unitary product, the need to thermally dry and/or protect the oxides from water contamination is avoided by treating the oxide with an alcohol to render it hydrophobic. The desirable gelling and drying characteristics of the suspensions are preserved.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 22, 1984
Date of Patent: December 31, 1985
    Assignee: Corning Glass Works
Inventors: John C. Luong, George W. Scherer
  • Patent number: 4560399
Abstract: Powdered oxides to be processed into glass or ceramic products by suspension in organic vehicles, followed by gelling and drying the suspensions and sintering the oxides to unitary products, are pretreated prior to incorporation in the suspension with a ketal drying agent. The pretreatment removes adsorbed water and surface hydroxyl groups from the articles, improving their dispersion properties and the properties of the resulting suspensions.
