Patent number: 6893716Abstract: Self-assembled monolayers and multilayer thin film structures were assembled from multiple components that were linked non-covalently by metal-ligand complexation. Non-covalently assembled multicomponent films assembly my the present method obviate problems associated with the covalent assembly of SAMs and multilayer thin film structures from large molecules. In one preferred embodiment, the disclosed film structures comprise 2,6 pyridinedicarboxylate ligands attached to an alkanethiol, which form a self-assembled monolayer on gold. The SAM is subsequently functionalized by sequential deposition of metal ions and ligands, allowing incorporation of one or more chromophores, photooxiding compounds or photoreducing to form multilayer film structures. Transition metals, lanthanide metals and other metals of varying charge may be employed in complexing with with 2,6 pyridinedicarboxylate ligands to form stable ordered structures.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 2003Date of Patent: May 17, 2005Assignee: Worcester Polytechnic InstituteInventors: William Grant McGimpsey, John C. Patent number: 4792874Abstract: A stabilizer is shown with a special leading edge for enhancing the magnetic interface between a magnetic head and a rapidly moving pliable magnetic disk. The stabilizer includes a stabilizing block with an opening through which the head protrudes for engagement with the disk. A flat, circumferential air bearing surface surrounds the opening adjacent the disk for generating coupling forces that deform the disk out of its nominal plane and into intimate contact with a transducing gap on the head. The leading edge of the stabilizer has a generally arcuate surface that abruptly meets the air bearing surface at a non-tangential transition. The transition appears to the disk as a fulcrum, imparting a torque to the disk that contributes to the coupling forces and ensures "capture", that is, interface, even with disks having troublesome irregularities such as warps.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 1987Date of Patent: December 20, 1988Assignee: Eastman Kodak CompanyInventors: John C.
