  • Patent number: 7472486
Abstract: A level with a level indicating vial is disclosed. The level includes a frame that defines at least one substantially flat exterior surface configured to be placed against a reference surface. The frame defines a plurality of interior surfaces. The level also includes a vial for indicating an orientation of the reference surface, and a vial holder for holding the vial in an orientation relative to the flat exterior surface of the frame. The vial holder is configured to cooperate with one of the interior surfaces of the frame to define a cavity when the vial holder contacts the interior surface. The level also includes an adhesive disposed in the cavity to secure the vial holder to the frame.

  • Patent number: 7316073
Abstract: A layout tool includes an object detector constructed and arranged to detect the location of a vertically extending edge portion of an object hidden from view behind a generally vertically extending wall surface, a light source that is capable of projecting a line of light along the wall surface, and an angular orientation mechanism operably coupled to the light projection mechanism. The angular orientation mechanism is operable to establish that the line of light is vertical. The light source and the object detector are operatively interengaged such that when a vertically extending edge is detected by the object detector, a vertically extending line of light projected on the surface by the light source indicates the location of a vertically extending edge portion of the hidden object.

  • Patent number: 7193405
Abstract: An embodiment of the invention provides a sensing device that includes a sensing circuit and a mode selection input device. The sensing circuit senses the presence of an object beneath a surface. The mode selection input device allows a user to select, using a single button, a desired mode from among at least three sensitivity modes without first accessing another sensitivity mode. In another embodiment, a sensing device includes a sensing circuit and a display. The sensing circuit senses the presence of a live electrical wire beneath a surface. The display includes an optical element and a light source to indicate the sensed presence of the live electrical wire.

  • Patent number: 6804899
Abstract: A retractable rule assembly includes a housing assembly and a reel in the housing assembly. An elongated blade formed of a ribbon of metal having one end connected to the reel is able to extend outwardly through a spaced opening in the housing assembly. A coil spring is arranged within the housing so as to wind up the blade when extending from the housing. A blade holding assembly is actuatable to hold the blade outwardly of the housing assembly opening and to release the blade from any position in which it is held. A relatively short free end portion of the blade has a film of plastic material adhered to a convex or a concave side thereof. The clear film of plastic material protects the covered portion of the blade from cracking or tearing and protects any indicia on the end of the blade from wear.

  • Patent number: 6782629
Abstract: A guiding device wherein an illustrated embodiment of the guiding device includes an elongated finger-resting surface, an elongated upstanding section, and an elongated first scale-supporting section. The upstanding section is positioned between the first scale-supporting section and the finger-resting section. The first scale is an elongated, narrow strip having a first scale surface rigidly and unreleasably attached to the first scale-supporting section of the second portion. The first scale has a second scale surface opposite to the first scale surface. The second scale surface has first indicia to indicate predetermined lengths along the first scale. The finger-resting surface permits fingers of a user gripping the guiding device to be positioned on the finger-resting surface while being protected from an implement by the upstanding section during movement of the implement along the guiding device, adjacent the first scale.

  • Publication number: 20040044438
Abstract: The invention provides a method of selling tape measures. The tape measures are contained within a point-of-sale vending device (i.e., a vending machine), and are dispensed individually when purchased by a user. Several varieties of tape measure may be included within the vending device. The vending device may allow the user to purchase tape measures using cash, credit cards, debit cards, store credit cards and automated clearing house transactions. Additionally, the vending device may be networked to a central inventory control computer to assist a retail store with inventory control and revenue tracking. Within the vending device, the tape measures may be unpackaged, resulting in a cost savings for the manufacturer. Because the tape measures are dispensed only when purchased and are inaccessible until then, theft of tape measures may be reduced or eliminated.

  • Patent number: 6643947
Abstract: The present invention comprises a retractable rule assembly that includes a housing assembly and a reel rotatably mounted in the housing assembly. An elongated blade formed of a ribbon of metal is mounted on the reel. One end of the blade is connected to the reel. The blade is constructed and arranged with respect to the housing assembly to extend from a position tangential to the reel outwardly through a spaced opening in the housing assembly. A coil spring that is formed of a ribbon of metal has a construction and arrangement between the housing assembly and the reel to rotate the reel in the housing assembly in a direction to wind the elongated blade about the reel when the blade is extending outwardly of the housing assembly opening. The blade has a “normal” concavo-convex cross-sectional configuration when extended and has a flat cross-sectional configuration when it is wound about the reel so that the wound reel is disposed about the reel in an abutting volute coil formation.

An elongated blade formed of a ribbon of metal having one end connected to the reel is constructed and arranged with respect to the housing assembly to extend from a position tangential to the reel outwardly through a spaced opening in the housing assembly in a normal concavo-convex cross-sectional configuration and to wind onto the reel in an abutting volute coil formation in a flattened cross-sectional configuration. The blade has an end hook member on the free end thereof. The end hook member is formed of sheet metal of a predetermined thickness to include a concavo-convex mounting portion having a U-shaped hook portion bent at a generally right angle from an end thereof.

  • Publication number: 20020096019
Abstract: One important fact that I do not want to leave out of my summary is that when my Self-Ejecting Chuck Wrench Attachment is used; it is just added to an existing, old fashioned Chuck Wrench that belongs to the customer! In that respect, it takes a very dangerous and potentially “KILLER” tool and immediately turns it into a safe and harmless and utilitarian piece of machinery that never again can do any harm!

  • Patent number: 6367161
Abstract: A coilable rule assembly having an increased standout in which an intermediate blade portion, which includes the normal breakpoint for a rule blade of the width, thickness, cross-sectional configuration, and material of the free end blade portion thereof and at least the increase in the standout contemplated, has a modified cross-sectional configuration with respect to the free end blade portion which is constructed and arranged to provide a greater resistance to bending into a flattened condition in the direction of the convex side thereof than the free end blade portion so as to increase the standout of the rule blade while allowing progressive movement into a flattened condition in the direction of the concave side during winding of the rule blade into the coiled state. The intermediate blade portion is formed with a rib structure extending longitudinally therein when in an uncoiled state which resists bending in the concave direction.
