  • Patent number: 7793210
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for enabling a spreadsheet program with formula support on small devices (like PDAs) while minimizing the amount of memory space used by the program and the accompanying compiled code during transfer of files from the desktop to the small devices. The user can download a spreadsheet file from the desktop to the small device via a conduit. A conduit is any 2-way communication device which connects a desktop to a small device and allows the transfer of data. Conduit software can convert the data to be transferred into a format understandable by both the desktop and PDA programs. The conduit software can also evaluate and parse the formulas and functions needed by the current file before the transfer and generate compiled code for the functions needed by the current file before transfer.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for enabling a spreadsheet program with formula support on small devices (like PDAs) while minimizing the amount of memory space used by not only the program, but also by the accompanying compiled code during transfer of files from the desktop to the small devices. The present invention allows the user to download a spreadsheet file from the desktop to the small device via a conduit. A conduit is any 2-way communication device which connects a desktop to a small device and allows the transfer of data. Since the operating system of the desktop and small device, like a PDA, are different, the present invention allows the conduit software to convert the data to be transferred in a format understandable by the respective programs of both the desktop and PDA. The present invention also allows the conduit software to evaluate and parse the formulas and functions needed by the current file before the transfer.

  • Patent number: 5958051
Abstract: Methods, apparatuses and products are provided for establishing and verifying the authenticity of data within one or more data files. In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, a method for verifying the authenticity of data involves providing at least one data file which includes an identifier and a signature file which includes the identifier for the data file as well as a digital signature. The digital signature is then verified using a computer system, and the identifier in the data file is compared with the identifier in the signature file using the computer system. In one embodiment, the identifier for the data file includes at least one certificate authority, site certificate, software publisher identifier, or a site name, and verifying the authenticity of data involves setting a security level for at least one of the certificate authority, the site certificate, the software publisher identifier, and the site name.

  • Patent number: 5878219
Abstract: A system is disclosed that integrates through a single client application access to information resources from a proprietary online service and the Internet. Using a single Web-based client, subscribers enter selections regarding the type of information they would like to retrieve. Relevant information is retrieved from the Internet using the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) addressing scheme of the Internet to locate information on the Internet. Relevant information is retrieved from the online service using extensions to the URL addressing scheme. The extensions map to a proprietary protocol used to obtain information resources from the online service. The client application understands the URLs and extended URLs and manages presentation of the information regardless of the source. Using the present invention, subscribers to online services are no longer required to toggle between a Web browser and service provider communication software in order to view content from both locations.
