Patent number: 5075286Abstract: A method of making a composite having superconducting capability is characterized by the steps: (1) forming a mixture of particulate yttrium or rare earth, that is alloyable with Ba and Cu, with particulate Ba, Cu, and Ag, where Ag additive is present in an amount of from 2 weight % to 30 weight % of the mixture, where the Ag additive has a particle size from 0.01 micrometer to 5 micrometers, (2) melting the mixture, (3) forming on a support surface a 10% to 30% porous ribbon of alloy having an interior Ag network, (4) removing the ribbon, (5) placing the ribbon alloy on top of a metal sheet, (6) placing a metal sheet on top of the ribbon alloy, (7) sealing the ribbon alloy within the metal sheets to form a composite, (8) uni-directional rolling the composite to reduce its cross-section, and (9) annealing the composite at from 100.degree. C. to 900.degree. C.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1989Date of Patent: December 24, 1991Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: John C. Powell, Graham A. Whitlow

Patent number: 5063988Abstract: Casting nozzles will provide improved flow conditions with the parameters controlled according to the present invention. The gap relationships between the nozzle slot and exit orifice must be controlled in combination with converging exit passageway to provide a smooth flow without shearing and turbulence in the stream. The nozzle lips are also rounded to improve flow and increase refractory life of the lips of the nozzle. The tundish walls are tapered to provide improve flow for supplying the melt to the nozzle. The nozzle is located about 45.degree. below top dead center for optimum conditions.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 1990Date of Patent: November 12, 1991Assignee: Armco Inc.Inventors: Donald W. Follstaedt, John C. Powell, Richard C. Sussman, Robert S. Williams

Patent number: 5063989Abstract: The present invention is directed to an improved process and apparatus for strip casting. The combination of a planar flow casting nozzle positioned back from the top dead center position with an attached nozzle extension, provides an increased level of casting control and quality. The nozzle extension provides a means of containing the molten pool above the rotating substrate to increase the control of molten metal at the edges of the strip and increase the range of coating thicknesses which may be produced. The level of molten metal in the containment means is regulated to be above the level of melt supplying the casting nozzle which produces a condition of planar drag flow with the casting substrate prior to solidification.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 1990Date of Patent: November 12, 1991Assignee: Armco Inc.Inventors: John C. Powell, Steven L. Campbell

Patent number: 4625787Abstract: The level of molten metal in the mold of a continuous metal caster is controlled by regulating the open area of a variable outlet nozzle in a tundish. The level of molten metal is monitored, and the extent and direction of any detected deviation is signalled to a computer which also receives a signal indicating the position of a movable valve member in the tundish outlet nozzle and a separate signal representing the rate of withdrawal of the cast metal from the mold. The computer determines the extent of movement of the valve member to correct the liquid metal level in the mold and controls actuation of a hydraulic drive system to move the valve member to reduce the position error to zero. The velocity of movement of the valve member is measured and fed back to the computer, with the velocity measurement being utilized by the computer to control the hydraulic system and more accurately position the movable valve member.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 1985Date of Patent: December 2, 1986Assignee: National Steel CorporationInventors: David L. Haveman, John C. Powell

Patent number: 4289082Abstract: A knife block for mounting two knives in a staggered knife tufting machine and another knife block for mounting two knives in an aligned knife tufting machine have a pair of flanges connected together by a central web. A knife receiving channel is formed on each side of the web, each channel including a pair of aligned facing grooves in the flanges. A pair of circular bores extend transversely through one of the flanges and opens into the grooves in that flange. A cylindrical clamping member of slightly smaller diameter than the bores is positioned in each bore and forced by a screw threaded into the flange toward the other flange. The screw is received within a radial recess in the clamping member which is larger in diameter than the screw to allow for manufacturing tolerances so that the clamping member can clamp a knife in each channel. In the staggered knife block the clamping member has two different diameters.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 1980Date of Patent: September 15, 1981Assignee: Spencer Wright Industries, Inc.Inventors: James E. Stoker, John C. Powell
