Method and apparatus for solving complex and computationally intensive inverse problems in real-time
Patent number: 6208982Abstract: The system of the present invention may “solve” a variety of inverse physical problem types by using neural network techniques. In operation, the present invention may generate data sets characterizing a particular starting condition of a physical process (such as data sets characterizing the parameters of an initial metal die), based upon an ending condition of the physical process (such as the parameters of the metal part to be stamped by the die). In one embodiment, the system of the present invention may generate a plurality of training data sets, each training data set characterizing a sample ending condition, the physical process that results in the sample ending condition, and a sample starting condition of the physical process. The training data sets may then be applied to a neural network so as to train the network.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 1997Date of Patent: March 27, 2001Assignee: Lockheed Martin Energy Research CorporationInventors: John D. Patent number: 6018729Abstract: A spot welder comprises a neural network for processing, in real time, current and voltage energizing a weld in progress. The neural network generates a predicted time of optimal weld strength and/or nugget size for the weld in progress. A controller terminates the weld in progress at the predicted time. A method for controlling a spot welder comprises the steps of: sensing in real time current and voltage energizing a spot weld in progress; predicting a time of optimal weld strength and/or nugget size with a neural network responsive to the sensed current and voltage; and, terminating the weld in progress at the predicted time. A sensor for electromotive forces (EMF) induced by the spot welder can generate a signal for canceling out a large fraction of EMF components in at least one or both of the current and voltage signals. EMF components are substantially precluded in the current signal if the current sensor uses a buried shunt.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1997Date of Patent: January 25, 2000Assignees: Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation, General Motors CorporationInventors: Thomas Zacharia, John D. Patent number: 5020081Abstract: A communication link interface having an assembly register which is loaded in response to a transmitter's clock rate and unloaded in response to a receiver's clock connected to the interface. The assembly register holds a series of data words received from the communication link. Logic gates or flip flops are provided to insure a time delay between loading the assembly register and unloading it.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 1989Date of Patent: May 28, 1991Assignee: Data General CorporationInventors: John D. Patent number: 4910754Abstract: An initialization or synchronization method in which at least a predetermined number of synchronization messages are sent out over a two-way communication line. The receipt of a synchronization message is awaited before terminating the transmission of synchronization message. After the transmission of synchronization messages has been terminated the receipt of a non-synchronization message will complete the synchronization process. However, certain conditions may cause synchronization to be restarted such as a predetermined number of consecutive error messages, failure to receive any message in a predetermined number of clock signals, receiving more than a predetermined number of synchronization signals, or a reset command.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1988Date of Patent: March 20, 1990Assignee: Data General CorporationInventors: John D. Allen, Jeffrey V. Hill

Patent number: 4837735Abstract: A parallel processing system for production rule programs utilizes a host processor for storing production rule right hand sides (RHS) and a plurality of rule processors for storing left hand sides (LHS). The rule processors operate in parallel in the recognize phase of the system recognize -Act Cycle to match their respective LHS's against a stored list of working memory elements (WME) in order to find a self consistent set of WME's. The list of WME is dynamically varied during the Act phase of the system in which the host executes or fires rule RHS's for those rules for which a self-consistent set has been found by the rule processors. The host transmits instructions for creating or deleting working memory elements as dictated by the rule firings until the rule processors are unable to find any further self-consistent working memory element sets at which time the production rule system is halted.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 1987Date of Patent: June 6, 1989Assignee: Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Inc.Inventors: John D. Patent number: 4394004Abstract: Disclosed are carpet stretching tools comprising a pair of laterally extending and parallel barbed bars including a lead-bar and a trail-bar, guide means permitting longitudinal movement between the barbed bars while maintaining them in parallelism, and force application means to forceably controllably move the carpet engageable barbed bars into proximity. Preferably, the guide means takes the form of slidably engaged collar and shank, and the force application means includes a longitudinally extending threaded stud firmly attached to one barbed bar and movably surrounded by the other barbed bar, and further includes a controllable handle. Loftily disposed guide shank and force application threaded stud might provide the sole connection between barbed bars to permit ancillary manual operations to be performed therebelow. The barbed bars might be of selectable lateral length appropriate to certain carpet stretching tasks.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 1981Date of Patent: July 19, 1983Inventors: James R. Allen, John D. Patent number: 4171999Abstract: Assembly of a fiber reinforced resin tank includes joining a plurality of prefabricted arcuate wall panel sections by elongated joiner panels extending along the vertical seams between adjacent wall sections to form the perimeter of a cylindrical tank. The wall sections have a plurality of openings adjacent the vertical sides and the joiner panels have columns of transversely spaced pairs of protrusions for coupling with the openings in adjacent panel sections. The joiner panel is able to pass circumferential hoop stress from one panel section to an adjacent panel section by providing effective clamping between the two panels through the use of continuous filament and/or geometrically oriented glass or other fibers placed into a hooked shape so the fibers extend between each pair of spaced protrusions and curve into the protrusions so the fibers extend along the protrusions.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1978Date of Patent: October 23, 1979Inventor: John D.
