  • Patent number: 6042737
Abstract: Describes a process for improving the adhesion of polymeric coatings to organic polymeric substrates and photochromic polymeric substrates. The process comprises irradiating the surface of a polymeric substrate prepared from or coated with a monomer composition having acrylic functionality in an oxygen containing environment with ultraviolet light; etching the treated surface; and applying to the etched surface a polymer-forming coating composition. Further described are articles and photochromic articles comprising in combination a polymeric substrate having on at least one surface thereof an adherent coating or photochromic coating prepared by the aforedescribed process.

  • Patent number: 5328645
Abstract: An alkoxysilane sol-gel composition and method for its production are disclosed whereby an alkoxysilane of the general formulaSi(OR).sub.4wherein R is an organic radical such as methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl is hydrolyzed with an acid catalyst and the resulting acidic sol is further hydrolyzed and condensed in the presence of an alkaline component which accelerates gelation to form an inorganic oxide network.

  • Patent number: 5316854
Abstract: An ultraviolet radiation absorbing coating comprising cerium oxide in an inorganic oxide matrix formed by the hydrolysis and condensation of alkoxysilane and/or other metal alkoxide or oxide which has a higher absorbance per unit thickness of coating by virtue of its much higher concentration of colloidal particles in said matrix and a reduced tendency to craze when exposed to temperatures in excess of 1000.degree. C. and/or temperature cycling between ambient temperature and 1000.degree. C. by virtue of heating a coated article at elevated temperature between 500.degree. C. and 1100.degree. C. before cooling the coated article.

  • Patent number: 5035745
Abstract: An abrasion resistant and ultraviolet radiation resistant coating is disclosed comprising an inorganic oxide matrix formed by the hydrolysis and condensation of an alkoxysilane and/or other metal alkoxide, further comprising cerium oxide for ultraviolet radiation resistant and/or silica for improved abrasion resistance. A partially hydrolyzed silane sol containing colloidal cerium oxide is ion-exchange with an anion exchange resin in one embodiment. In another a partially hydrolyzed silane sol containing colloidal silica is ion-exchanged to remove sodium ions prior to adding the colloidal ceria resulting in improved properties in the coating composition and resultant coating.
