  • Patent number: 5252193
Abstract: A reinforced fluorinated cation exchange membrane for the electrolysis of alkali halide solutions is reinforced with fabric containing both sacrificial and permanent fibers in which the anolyte surface of the membrane is abraded to expose some of the reinforcement crossover points. A process for abrading the membrane and an electrolytic cell using the membrane are also claimed. The preferred method of abrasion is continuous sanding. The abraded membrane improves the current efficiency of the electrolytic cell.
