Abstract: A magnetic head assembly has a plurality of magnetic heads of magnetic ferrite bonded in a single piece faceplate of magnetic ferrite. The magnetic heads are substantially surrounded by the magnetic ferrite faceplate. The bulk shielding properties of the magnetic ferrite faceplate effectively shield each magnetic head from crosstalk produced by other heads. Preferably, the faceplate and magnetic heads are formed from the same magnetic ferrite. The magnetic head assembly of the invention has application for use in magnetic tape recorders and magnetic disc drives.

Abstract: A method including the following steps: (1) providing a single piece magnetic ferrite faceplate which has a face region and which has at least two aligned slots which open on the face region and extend into the faceplate; (2) providing a multihead magnetic ferrite "breadslice" core structure which includes an elongated base portion connecting at least two in-line magnetic heads which extend from the base portion; (3) bonding the magnetic ferrite breadslice core structure to the faceplate so that the magnetic heads extend into the slots; and (4) removing the base portion from the breadslice core structure so that individual magnetic heads remain bonded in their respective slots in the faceplate.

Abstract: To reconcile a variety of problems associated with multitrack magnetic heads, modified shields therefor were fabricated. Each such shield is comprised of a plurality of laminations of magnetically, and mechanically, soft material bonded together into a unitary stack of appropriate thickness. The laminations are typically of .mu.-metal; and the stacked laminations are preferably provided with copper cladding as is the practice in the art. At the medium bearing surface of the shield, a cutout is provided; and into such cutout a small insert of magnetically soft, mechanically hard, material, e.g. Sendust, is provided.
