  • Publication number: 20030106102
Abstract: Regulation of expression of programmed cell death, including senescence, in plants is achieved by integration of a gene or gene fragment encoding senescence-induced deoxyhypusine synthase, senescence-induced elF-5A or both into the plant genome in antisense orientation. Plant genes encoding senescence-induced deoxyhypusine synthase and senescence-induced elF-5A are identified and the nucleotide sequences of each, alone and in combination are used to modify senescence in transgenic plants.

  • Publication number: 20030064952
Abstract: The present invention relates to isolated and/or purified rat apoptosis-specific eucaryotic initiation Factor-5A (eIF-5A) and deoxyhypusine synthase (DHS) nucleic acids and polypeptides. The present invention also relates to methods of modulating apoptosis using apoptosis-specific eIF-5A and DHS, and antisense oligonucleotides and expression vectors of apoptosis-specific eIF-5A and DHS useful in such methods.

  • Patent number: 6345585
Abstract: A jet-propelled personal watercraft having a grab handle for a child riding in front of the operator of the watercraft. The watercraft includes a hull defining an engine compartment sized to contain an internal combustion engine for powering the watercraft, a deck portion providing a passenger area containing controls operable by an operator in the passenger area, and a longitudinally extending seat adapted to accommodate at least two riders seated in straddle fashion. A jet propulsion unit is powered by the engine, the jet propulsion unit including a steerable water discharge nozzle. The controls include a set of handlebars operatively connected to the steerable water discharge nozzle to facilitate steering of the watercraft by the operator, the handlebars extending transversely with respect to the watercraft and having a center and a rotational axis extending through such center.

  • Patent number: 5692497
Abstract: A microprocessor controlled ventilator controls a patient's breathing selectively. In a preferred aspect, the ventilator utilizes intratracheal pulmonary ventilation and a reverse thrust catheter to provide all patient inspiration. The microprocessor connects to a pneumatic subsystem which includes a variety of sensors and actuators and the catheter disposed in the patient's trachea. A feedback control loop provides a basis for controlling selected actuators within the subsystem to control the patient's breathing. The microprocessor provides the selective venting of expiration gases, and the selective mixing of treatment gases, such as anesthesia. The ventilator has a plurality of possible ventilating modes, each selectable by the user, thereby reducing the number of hospital equipment needed to all forms of ventilation required by a patients.

  • Patent number: 5087417
Abstract: Senescence in perishable plant tissue is inhibited by the application thereto of an effective amount of a compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are each selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, --OH or --OR.sub.7, provided that at least one of R.sub.1 to R.sub.5 is a hydroxyl group, R.sub.6 is selected from the group consisting of --OH, --OR.sub.8 and --NHR.sub.9, R.sub.7 is a substituent group, R.sub.8 is the residue of an ester-forming compound and R.sub.9 is the residue of an amide-forming compound. The compound may be prepared synthetically and, in some cases, can be isolated from natural sources, for example, the glucose ester of ferulic acid may be isolated from carnation petals.

  • Patent number: 5016861
Abstract: An upwardly bowed single transverse leaf spring is provided and includes longitudinally spaced central mounting areas between which a longitudinal mid-portion of the spring extends. The spring includes opposite end portions on remote sides of said mounting areas for anchoring relative to vehicle wheel supporting spindle structures and the mounting areas of the spring have mounts stationarily mounted relative thereto but adjustably positionable longitudinally of the spring and the mounts are pivotally mounted from the stationary mounting structures for oscillation about horizontal parallel axes extending transversely of the leaf spring with the pivotal mounting of the mounts from the stationary mounting structures being such that each axis of oscillation of a mount relative to the corresponding stationary mounting structure may be adjusted transversely of the corresponding vehicle.
