Equipment for continuous or semi-continuous casting of metal with improved metal filling arrangement
Patent number: 10500635Abstract: An apparatus for continuous or semi-continuous low pressure casting of metal, in particular directly-cooled (DC) casting of extended objects such as a rods, bars or billets of aluminium. The apparatus includes a frame construction with at least one chill or mould having a mould cavity that is provided with an upwardly open inlet and an outlet with cooling means. The inlet of the mould is connected to a distribution chamber receiving liquid metal from a metal store such as a holding furnace via a metal supply channel or launder. A flexible launder section is provided between the launder and the metal distribution chamber whereby the frame construction with the moulds and distribution chamber can be raised and lowered to enable complete filling of metal to the moulds. Subsequently it is possible to control the metal level in each respective mould cavity in relation to the metal level in the launder and thereby controlling the low pressure casting.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 2016Date of Patent: December 10, 2019Assignee: NORSK HYDRO ASAInventors: Geir Atle Røen, Daniel Anders Sjølset, Arild Håkonsen, Rune Ledal, John Erik Hafsås, Ulf Håkon Tundal -

Patent number: 8413711Abstract: A device in connection with equipment for continuous or semi-continuous casting of metal, in particular direct mold (DC) casting of aluminum in the form of a billet or wire billet. The device includes a mold with a cavity or a mold (3) that is provided with an inlet connected, via supply channels (6, 18) and a distribution chamber (5), to a metal reservoir (13) and an outlet arranged in the mold with a support and devices for cooling the metal. In connection with the supply channels (6, 18) between the metal reservoir (13) and the molds (3), a metal lifting container (15) is arranged at an inlet (16) to the metal reservoir (13) via a channel (18) and to the distribution chamber (5) and the molds (3) via an outlet (17) via another channel (6).Type: GrantFiled: November 26, 2008Date of Patent: April 9, 2013Assignee: Norsk Hydro ASAInventors: Bjørn Vaagland, John Olav Fagerlie, John Erik Hafsås, Arild Håkonsen, Geir Øyen, Terje Iveland

Patent number: 7445037Abstract: A method and equipment for continuous or semi-continuous casting of metal, in particular directly-cooled (DC) casting of aluminum, including at least one mold (3) with a mold cavity (11) that is provided with an inlet (4) linked to a metal store and an outlet with devices (27) for cooling the metal so that an object in the form of an extended string, rod or bar is cast through the outlet. The metal is supplied to the mold (3) in such a way and with such regulation that the metallostatic pressure in the contact point (solidification zone) against the mold wall is virtually zero during casting.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 2004Date of Patent: November 4, 2008Assignee: Norsk Hydro ASAInventors: Bjarne Anders Heggset, Bjørn Vaagland, Steinar Benum, Geir Olav Ånesbug, Torstein Sæther, John Erik Hafsås

Patent number: 6627010Abstract: The present invention concerns procedures for producing an alloy from a eutectic alloy system, in order to form a workpiece for rolling or extrusion purposes by, for example, producing an Al—Mg—Si alloy, which can be precipitation-hardened, which alloy, after having been heated to a temperature above the solubility temperature of phases which can be precipitated, is kept at this temperature until the phases have dissolved and is cooled at a cooling rate which is rapid enough to avoid most of the precipitation of the phases and slow enough to avoid most of the precipitation of dispersoid particles. At cooling rates within this interval, most coarse phases which have a reductive effect on the processing rate can be avoided and, at the same time, the number of small dispersoid particles which have a reductive effect on the mechanical properties after hardening is limited.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 1999Date of Patent: September 30, 2003Assignee: Norsk Hydro ASAInventors: Oddvin Reiso, Ulf Tundal, John Erik Hafsås, Oddgeir Sjøthun
