Patent number: 7599555Abstract: A method compresses a set of correlated signals by first converting each signal to a sequence of integers, which are further organized as a set of bit-planes. An inverse accumulator is applied to each bit-plane to produce a bit-plane of shifted bits, which are permuted according to a predetermined permutation to produce bit-planes of permuted bits. Each bit-plane of permuted bits is partitioned into a set of blocks of bits. Syndrome bits are generated for each block of bits according to a rate-adaptive base code. Subsequently, the syndrome bits are decompressed in a decoder to recover the original correlated signals.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 2005Date of Patent: October 6, 2009Assignee: Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories, Inc.Inventors: Morgan McGuire, Wojciech Matusik, Hanspeter Pfister, John F. Patent number: 4489894Abstract: A spraying apparatus to deliver inductively charged spray, for example to crops. The apparatus includes a spray head and electrodes to apply a potential difference in the region of the spray head to charge spray. An aspirating means is arranged to remove liquid deposited on an electrode to reduce interference with the charging process. When the spray liquid is to be at high potential in the apparatus a long high resistivity supply tube may be provided. The aspirating means may be operated by spray liquid bled from a pressurized supply spray liquid.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1982Date of Patent: December 25, 1984Assignee: National Research Development CorporationInventors: John A. Patent number: 4237028Abstract: An emulsion of a disperse phase liquid in a continuous phase liquid is produced by atomizing the disperse phase liquid electrostatically and entraining the atomized droplets in a moving layer of continuous phase liquid. To produce a spray with atomized droplets of small and uniform size a disperse phase liquid, such as wax in a solvent, is directed to flow over the sharp edge of a blade maintained at a high voltage with respect to the conductive surface of the drum. The drum is rotated so that the surface is wetted by a reservoir of continuous phase liquid and so that the surface layer of liquid intercepts the spray of droplets at a uniform rate to produce an emulsion of consistent concentration. The concentration is controlled by setting the rates of flow and the number of cycles of interception.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 1978Date of Patent: December 2, 1980Assignee: National Research Development CorporationInventors: John F. Hughes, John M. C. Roberts

Patent number: 4230503Abstract: A process and apparatus for producing modified starch products. A slurry of starch is continuously moved at elevated temperature and pressure through a tubular heating zone and the hot fluid mass emerging from the heating zone is forced through a flow restricting zone within which the fluid mass is highly compressed. This highly compressed fluid material emerges from the confining zone into a tubular reaction zone with a sudden release of energy in the form of a fine spray or mist. The compressive forces followed by the sudden energy release act on the starch molecules to temporarily greatly increase the reactivity of the starch within the reaction zone, whereby modified starch products are quickly formed.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 1979Date of Patent: October 28, 1980Assignee: Cellcor Corporation of Canada LimitedInventor: John F. Hughes

Patent number: 4221609Abstract: A continuous process for the production of starch hydrolysates, such as corn syrup. The process comprises continuously moving an aqueous acidic starch slurry feed through a confined preheat zone at a pressure of at least 300 psi to raise the temperature of the slurry to at least 100.degree. C., continuously forcing the hot fluid mass emerging from the preheat zone through an elongated compressing zone, continuously receiving the fluid material emerging from the compressing zone in the form of a fine spray or mist including water vapor in a confined zone of reduced pressure and continuously collecting from said reduced pressure zone a homogeneous starch syrup having a higher solids content than the starch slurry feed. The temperature and pressure of the hot fluid mass entering the elongated compressing zone and the acidity of the feed slurry can be controlled to selectively provide syrup products having a wide range of DE values.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1978Date of Patent: September 9, 1980Assignee: Kirby, Shapiro, Eades and CohenInventor: John F. Patent number: 4155884Abstract: A process and apparatus are described for producing modified starch products. In the method of the invention, a slurry of starch is continuously moved at elevated temperature and pressure through a tubular heating zone and the hot fluid mass emerging from the heating zone is forced through a flow restricting zone within which the fluid mass is highly compressed. This highly compressed fluid material emerges from the confining zone into a tubular reaction zone with a sudden release of energy in the form of a fine spray or mist. Patent number: 4146064Abstract: The danger of fire from leaking aerosol containers is reduced by reducing the charge potential on leaking containers. This is achieved by a filling method in which an effective amount, for example 0.1 to 5% by weight of a charge reducing agent and a non-aqueous product intermediate are mixed, the mixture is filled into the container and the container is then pressurized with a flammable propellant.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1977Date of Patent: March 27, 1979Assignee: S. C. Johnson & Son, Inc.Inventors: John F. Hughes, John M. C. Roberts
