Patent number: 6951806Abstract: A structure includes a substrate, first and second signal lines above the substrate, where unused substrate surface area exists between the first and second signal lines, and a first shield line in the unused substrate surface area. To define the first shield line, the signal line layout which includes the first and second signal lines is defined. Any areas which are not signal lines are then defined as unused areas of the substrate. The shield lines including the first shield line are then defined in portions of the unused areas of the substrate. In this manner, shield lines are automatically designed at every available location without requiring any allocation of substrate surface area.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 1999Date of Patent: October 4, 2005Assignee: Sun Microsystems, Inc.Inventors: Daniel G. Schweikert, John F. MacDonald

Patent number: 6449754Abstract: A technique measuring accuracy of parasitic capacitance extraction defines the error in an extracted total net parasitic capacitance intended for timing analysis as a sum of the errors in the extracted values of the individual capacitance elements, with the error for each element being influenced by a weight factor. Similarly, the technique defines an error in the extracted value of a crosstalk factor for the net of interest as a difference between the errors in the extracted values of the individual capacitance elements, with the error in each element being influenced by a weight factor. For signal timing and crosstalk analyses, the weight factors allow a designer to focus calibration of the extraction tool on the capacitive element having the highest weight factor.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 2000Date of Patent: September 10, 2002Assignee: Sun Microsystems, Inc.Inventors: Eileen H. You, Weize Xie, John F. MacDonald

Patent number: 5471433Abstract: A trajectory estimation system for estimating a trajectory of a target in sponse to a series of data items which generated in response to motion of the target. The trajectory estimation system includes a data segmentation means and a trajectory selection means. The data segmentation means processes the series of data items in accordance with a regression/multiple-hypothesis methodology to generate a plurality of segments, each having associated data items which have similar features. The trajectory selection means for processing said segments in accordance with a multiple-model hypothesis methodology to generate a corresponding statistically-supportable candidate trajectory motion estimate of target motion thereby to provide indicia of an overall trajectory of the target.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1994Date of Patent: November 28, 1995Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Sherry E. Hammell, Kai F. Gong, Neil A. Jackson, Kathleen D. Keay, John F. MacDonald

Patent number: 5469374Abstract: A system having a device for comparing incoming data with hypotheses prevsly formed from prior data for providing new hypotheses on target information. It has application when the data source is from either single or multiple targets. The incoming datum to the system forms new hypotheses assuming the incoming datum is invalid, forms new hypotheses assuming the new datum begins a new segment of information, and forms new hypotheses assuming the new datum is associated with segments in prior retained hypotheses. The one hypothesis of the thusly formed new hypotheses with the greatest likelihood of target information is then selected for further analyzation and the hypothesis selected and other hypotheses are retained for further processing with new incoming datum.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 1993Date of Patent: November 21, 1995Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Marcus L. Graham, John F. MacDonald, Kai F. Gong, Kathleen D. Keay

Patent number: 5410700Abstract: A computer system for processing and committing data comprises a processor, an external storage device such as DASD or tape coupled to the processor, and a working memory such as RAM. An application program updates data in the working memory and then requests that the data be committed, i.e. written to the external storage device. In response, an operating system function determines which data or blocks have been changed and supplies to an I/O service an identification of the changed data or blocks to cause the I/O service to write the changed data or blocks to the external storage device. Thus, the application program is not burdened with the management of the I/O. The operating system permits the program to continue with other processing while the data is being written from the working memory to the external storage device. As a result, the program need not wait while the data is written to the external storage.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 1991Date of Patent: April 25, 1995Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Jean G. Fecteau, Joseph M. Gdaniec, James P. Hennessy, John F. MacDonald, Damian L. Osisek

Patent number: 5293161Abstract: A selective call receiver (100) comprises a receiver (104) for receiving a message and a vibrator (116) capable of vibrating at a selected one of at least two selectable frequencies for alerting a user of a received message. The vibrator (116) also has a selector (120) or a tuning element (130) for varying the frequency of the vibrator (116).Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1992Date of Patent: March 8, 1994Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: John F. MacDonald, Jeffrey S. King

Patent number: 4578739Abstract: An assembly for a pager having a main housing that is generic to a family of papers having different outputs. A subassembly housing contains the output circuitry for each member of the family of pagers. A generic circuit is mounted on a circuit board that is slideable within the main housing between a first and second position. The circuit board, in a first position, allows the subassembly housing to mate with the main housing. The subassembly housing is locked into mated engagement with the main housing when the circuit board is slid from its first position to its second position. The locking engagement is provided by a tongue-like projection mounted on the circuit board which is received by a cavity in the subassembly housing when the circuit board slides to its second position. In conjunction with this flange mounted on the subassembly housing engages a first end of the circuit board.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1983Date of Patent: March 25, 1986Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: John M. McKee, John F. MacDonald

Patent number: 4397887Abstract: A process to program ROM's after the insulation, gates, and interconnect circuitry have been formed by using a contact mask to define openings at the depletion cells, which openings extend beside the gates to the sources and drain so as to allow phosphorus dopant to be diffused sideways under the gates to short out the cell.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 1982Date of Patent: August 9, 1983Assignee: National Semiconductor CorporationInventors: Haluk M.
