Patent number: 9501226Abstract: Controlling I/O operations with a storage device includes establishing a quota that corresponds to a maximum amount of data to store on the storage device in a given amount of time, determining if processing an I/O operation would cause the quota to be exceeded, and performing the I/O operation if the quota is not exceeded. The quota may be provided in I/O operations per second or as I/O throughput. Controlling I/O operations with a storage device may also include accumulating credit in response to a rate of I/O operations being less than the quota and performing I/O operations when the quota is exceeded in response to the credit being greater than zero. The credit may be decreased if an I/O operation is performed when the quota is exceeded.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 2014Date of Patent: November 22, 2016Assignee: EMC IP Holding Company LLCInventors: James L. Davidson, Chris Bunting, Arieh Don, Patrick Brian Riordan, John F. Madden, Jr.

Patent number: 9383940Abstract: Described are techniques for performing data migration for a source logical volume and a target. The target is configured as storage for another mirror of the source logical volume prior to copying data from the source logical volume to the target, and if the target is configured storage of another logical volume of the data storage system, the configured storage is remapped as storage for another mirror of the source logical volume prior to copying data from the source logical volume to the target. One or more invalid bits are set indicating that the target does not contain a valid copy of data from the source logical volume. Data is copied from the first mirror of the source logical volume to the target. Invalid bits are cleared as data portions of the first mirror of the source logical volume are copied to the target.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 2014Date of Patent: July 5, 2016Assignee: EMC CorporationInventors: Stephen Richard Ives, John F. Madden, Jr., Michael Dudnik, Hagit Brit-Artzi, Roii Raz, Hui Wang, Gabi Hershkovitz, Qun Fan, Ofer Michael

Patent number: 8397001Abstract: Described are techniques for storage configuration. Defined are one or more initiator groups each including one or more initiator ports, one or more target groups each including one or more target ports, and one or more storage groups each including one or more devices. A masking view is created where the masking view includes a first of the initiator groups, a first of the target groups, and a first of the storage groups. The masking view indicates which devices of the first storage group are accessible using one or more paths. Each of the one or more paths is specified using an initiator port from the first initiator group and a target port from the first target group.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 2011Date of Patent: March 12, 2013Assignee: EMC CorporationInventors: Kevin Martin, Michael J. Scharland, Patrick Brian Riordan, Arieh Don, Violet S. Beckett, John F. Madden, Jr.

Patent number: 7502898Abstract: A storage system is provided that includes a plurality of storage devices and a data structure, accessible to the storage system, that includes a plurality of records corresponding to a plurality of network devices that are coupled to the storage system. Each record includes configuration data that identifies each of the plurality of storage devices to which data access by a respective one of the plurality of network devices is authorized. Each record may further include visibility data that identifies whether certain types of non-data access, such as requests for general information relating to a respective storage device, by a respective one of the plurality of network devices is permitted, even though data access to the respective storage device by the respective one of the plurality of network devices is not authorized.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 2006Date of Patent: March 10, 2009Assignee: EMC CorporationInventors: Steven M. Blumenau, John T. Fitzgerald, John F. Madden, Jr.

Patent number: 7260636Abstract: A method and apparatus for a networked computer system including a plurality of devices and a shared resource. In response to one of the devices attempting to access the shared resource and representing itself to the shared resource as a first device, determining whether the device is attempting to access the shared resource through a physical connection through the network that is different than a physical connection used by the first device to access the shared resource, and when it is, denying the attempted access.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 2000Date of Patent: August 21, 2007Assignee: EMC CorporationInventors: Steven M. Blumenau, John T. Fitzgerald, John F. Madden, Jr.

Patent number: 6240511Abstract: Method and apparatus for detecting changes in a configuration of a computer system including a host computer and at least one computer system resource. Information relating to a reference configuration of the computer system is stored at a first point in time. A current configuration of the computer system is determined at a second point in time. The current configuration of the computer system is compared with the reference configuration to determine whether the current configuration differs from the reference configuration. An indication is provided when the current configuration of the computer system differs from the reference configuration.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 1998Date of Patent: May 29, 2001Assignee: EMC CorporationInventors: Steven M. Blumenau, Steven Cohen, John F. Madden, Jr.
