Patent number: 7778737Abstract: A method and system for shedding loads based upon a power system characteristic, such as voltage or frequency, is provided. In one embodiment, a remote party, such as a power generator or utility, transmits a signal to a control device proximately located with a load device. Upon receipt of the signal, the control device measures the power system characteristic for a predetermined time to establish a baseline threshold. The control device then monitors the power system characteristic. When the power system characteristic falls outside the baseline threshold, the control device sheds load. In one embodiment, the loads are prioritized such that the load of least importance may be shed first.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 2006Date of Patent: August 17, 2010Assignee: Comverge, Inc.Inventors: John F. Patent number: 7648077Abstract: A system for communicating across conventional HVAC wiring is provided. The system includes a communication device having a communication module capable of inducing low power, high frequency current signals into a single control wire coupling, for example, a thermostat with a compressor. The communication module includes a power supply module that draws power sufficient to operate the communication module from the existing HVAC wiring, so as to eliminate any need for batteries or external power sources. A second communication module may be coupled to the single control wire. The second communication module operates as a transceiver sending communication signals to, and receiving communication signals from, the communication module. In one embodiment, the communication module is disposed within a building, for example coupled to an electronic thermostat, while the second communication module is disposed outside the building near the compressor.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 2006Date of Patent: January 19, 2010Assignee: Emerson Electric Co.Inventors: John F. Rossi, Paul Michael Huddleston, Mark Lee Barton, Bradley A. Smith, Howard Ng, Carl J. Mueller, James P. Garozzo, Cecil H. Barrett, Russell Thomas House

Patent number: 5682100Abstract: There is provided a system and method for locating faults in power distribution systems with complex topology, such as multi-phase urban networks (6), utilizing reliable time-delay techniques as well as a transponder (22) at a monitoring point to sense the arrival of the transient fault pulse and for transmitting a timing pulse a known time delay after sensing the arrival of the transient fault pulse and a calibration pulse a known time delay after transmitting the timing pulse. Installed along the power distribution system at key locations are receiver stations (4, 4a, 4b) capable of sensing the arrival of the transient fault pulse, timing pulse and calibration pulse and measuring the time intervals occurring between each. The location of the fault is then determined based on these timing intervals, known time delays and the known propagation velocity of the electric power cables in the power distribution system.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 1995Date of Patent: October 28, 1997Assignee: Electric Power Research Institute Inc.Inventors: John F.
