Patent number: 6241028Abstract: A method and system for measuring data in a fluid transportation conduit, such as a well for the production of oil and/or gas. The system employs one or more miniature sensing devices which comprise sensing equipment that is contained in a preferably spherical nut-shell which has an outer width which is smaller than the internal width of the conduit. One or more sensing devices are released sequentially in the conduit and are induced to move in longitudinal direction through the conduit to measure data at desired intervals of time, without requiring a complex infrastructure.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 1999Date of Patent: June 5, 2001Assignee: Shell Oil CompanyInventors: Aarnoud F. Patent number: 5273387Abstract: A binding apparatus having a base portion and a binding mechanism is disclosed which binds a stack of punched paper sheets with a plastic binding element having an elongated linear spine and integral spaced resilient curled fingers extending from the spine. The binding mechanism includes a fixed binding comb and a series of push fingers. The binding comb has a series of upstanding fixed spaced pickets having sufficient clearance between each other to allow the binding element curled fingers to be manually shifted laterally relative to the fixed pickets such that each of the curled fingers surrounds a portion of the push fingers. The binding mechanism also has a device for moving the push fingers outwardly from the pickets to uncurl the curled fingers so that a stack of punched paper sheets can be placed on the uncurled fingers.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 1992Date of Patent: December 28, 1993Assignee: Taurus Tetraconcepts, Inc.Inventors: Charles T. Groswith, III, Richard D. Phipps, Robert L. Lathrop, Jr., John F. Stewart, Rick J. Kaufmann

Patent number: 5222844Abstract: An improvement to an air logic circuit for an airfeed peck drill includes the insertion of an advance valve into the timer circuit. This advance valve generates a signal to actuate the timer circuit only after the drill quill has fed forward through rapid advance.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1991Date of Patent: June 29, 1993Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventors: James A. Maass, John F. Stewart, Joseph F. Carter

Patent number: 5163350Abstract: A paper punch and binding apparatus has two punch mechanisms, one for punching round holes in a paper sheets stack and one for punching rectangular holes in another paper sheets stack. A single lever or crank simultaneously operates and drives a series of round end punches to shear the round holes and a punch plate with integral rectangular punch elements shear rectangular holes. A four-bar linkage connects the lever to the punch plate and the series of the punches in a manner that both the plate and punches are driven in a vertical straight line and with a greater mechanical advantage at the start and over the first increments of the punching operation. In a preferred embodiment, a binding station is provided in an apparatus base portion particularly for binding with a Douvry-type plastic resilient loops binding element. The binding station has an operating knob which operates a simple gear interconnect train for uncurling the resilient loops and allowing the punched hole stack to be inserted thereon.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 1991Date of Patent: November 17, 1992Assignee: Taurus Tetraconcepts, Inc.Inventors: Charles T. Groswith, III, Richard D. Phipps, Robert L. Lathrop, Jr., John F. Stewart, Rick J. Kaufmann

Patent number: 5001826Abstract: A nose piece for use with an airfeed drill includes a cylindrical portion which has on one end a truncated cone for mounting a drill support bearing and on the other end a flange. Formed within the flange are a plurality of slots. These slots correspond to an array of rotatable fasteners and locking pieces mounted on the front of the housing. Attachment of the nose piece to the housing is accomplished by placing the slots over the fasteners and locking pieces and tightening the fasteners.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 1990Date of Patent: March 26, 1991Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventors: John F. Stewart, Joseph F. Carter, James A. Maas

Patent number: 4961675Abstract: A device for adjustably controlling the position and set-back of a piston rod which extends from a damping cylinder used on an airfeed peck drill. The device includes a plurality of ball members which surround the piston rod. The ball members are positioned against the piston rod by a spring biased cone having a tapered internal surface. The balls are further positioned with respect to the cone by a spring biased ball separator which is movable with respect to the cone by air pressure. The travel of the piston rod is made adjustable by a nut member threadably engaged with the housing.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1987Date of Patent: October 9, 1990Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventor: John F. Patent number: 4948521Abstract: A metalworking composition in the form of a stable emulsion having lubricating as well as cleaning properties which is based essentially on non-hazardous components. The composition comprises a homogenous mixture of water, a vegetable oil, a phosphatide, a thickening agent and an emulsifying system consisting of an anionic surfactant and a nonionic biodegradable detergent. The emulsion-type mixture can be prepared through sequential addition of the non-hazardous components followed by homogenization in a high-speed mixture. A concentrated lubricant is thereby obtained which readily forms an adhering film on the surface of a metallic workpiece and all types of metalworking mediums during machining operations to effectively prevent galling or fouling. The metalworking composition is environmentally safe and significantly reduces problems associated with cleanup and corrosion.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1989Date of Patent: August 14, 1990Assignee: Cut-N-Clean Products, Inc.Inventors: John F. Stewart, Jr., Michael L. Griffin

Patent number: 4942791Abstract: Disclosed is an ergonomic handle for a hand-held tool, in particular for an air tool. The handle has a trilobular shape, designed to provide a secure grip and thereby reduce operator fatigue. The handle is also flared at the end which sits nearest the workpiece. This flared feature allows the operator who presses downward on the handle while operating the tool to avoid having his hand slip past the end of the sleeve. The handle is not an integral part of the tool and can be removed to allow maintenance, repair or replacement of the tool. Moreover, in a preferred embodiment, the handle has a bore along its axis and is provided with a unique locking mechanism which prevents rotational or axial movement of the tool relative to the handle. Optionally, the outer surface of the handle is finished so as to reduce slippage in the event it becomes slick with perspiration or oil, and is made of a thermal insulating material to make use comfortable.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 1989Date of Patent: July 24, 1990Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventors: John F. Stewart, Russell D. Richardson
