The substrate surface is formed with specific dimensions so as to enable the coating of the substrate with an undercoat film including, for example, an organometallic compound or an organometallic chelate compound such as any suitable hydrolyzable organozirconium, organotitanium or organoaluminum compound with a silane. Elimination of the "pepper spot" print defect is accomplished without the addition of a thickening agent to the undercoat film.
