Patent number: 12207644Abstract: An active barrier to termites and other insects includes a polymeric or paper substrate; and a copper-carbon matrix, wherein the copper-carbon matrix is incorporated into or is coated onto the polymeric or paper substrate. The resulting combination of the substrate and copper-carbon matrix allows for the creation of films, tapes, coated paper and fabric, or molded or formed parts that interfere with and block the passage or entry beyond the barrier of termites or other insects. Uses may be as diverse as but not limited to underlayment(s) for temporary, semi-permanent or permanent structures as well as films and barriers for walls, roofs of permanent, semi-permanent or temporary structures, or interior spaces, cabinets, or vehicles or protecting equipment, telecommunication gear, electronics or other assets that may be impacted, damaged or degraded by termite or other such insect infestation.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 2021Date of Patent: January 28, 2025Assignee: Engineered Materials, Inc.Inventors: Keith Donaldson, John Franey, Nancy Harper

Patent number: 9083071Abstract: An electrical device that comprises a tunable cavity filter that includes a container and a post. The container encloses a cavity therein, wherein interior surfaces of the container are covered with a metal layer. The post is configured be movable through an opening in the container such that at least a portion of the post is locatable inside of the cavity.Type: GrantFiled: January 4, 2011Date of Patent: July 14, 2015Assignee: Alcatel LucentInventors: Noriaki Kaneda, John Franey

Patent number: 9016100Abstract: A fully hydraulic edging system suitable for use in wide plate mills is disclosed. The need for electro-mechanical screws to effect large movements of the side rollers is avoided by employing a pull-back hydraulic cylinder for this purpose. The main hydraulic cylinders are switched to a non-operational mode during large movements thus avoiding the need for large volumes of hydraulic fluid to be transferred under high pressure.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 2010Date of Patent: April 28, 2015Assignee: Siemens PLCInventors: Michael Trevor Clark, John Franey, Martyn Jones, Andrew Mallison

Publication number: 20050067522Abstract: A reel for storing optical fiber is disclosed that significantly reduces the torsional force applied to optical fiber as the fiber is being wound onto the reel for storage. The optical fiber reel comprises two spindles that are offset with respect to the rotational center of the reel. Such an arrangement causes the fiber to be wound onto the reel in a substantially linear fashion, thus preventing the torsional force and resulting twisting that cause micro-cracks to develop. The spindles are of a sufficiently large diameter to facilitate operational use of the fiber while stored on the spindle without increasing the attenuation of signals that could result from the use of a smaller diameter spindle.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 29, 2003Publication date: March 31, 2005Inventors: Clyde Bethea, John Franey

Publication number: 20050061155Abstract: A method and apparatus for automatically monitoring air filters in a telecommunication equipment rack is disclosed. One or more pressure switches are used to detect a pressure differential between air exiting the filter and a reference air pressure, such as the ambient air pressure in a telecommunications equipment facility. When a filter becomes contaminated, the pressure of the air exiting the filter will drop relative to the reference air pressure. When the pressure drop relative to the reference air pressure crosses a threshold, a signal indicative of the need to replace or clean the filter in the equipment rack is generated.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 24, 2003Publication date: March 24, 2005Inventor: John Franey
