  • Patent number: 10900852
Abstract: An oarlock-installation for a boat in which an oarlock is mounted on an upright pin for angular displacement about the pin during rowing of the boat, the oarlock-installation comprising a mechanism for deriving measurements of angular displacement of the oarlock from a datum angle about the pin during the rowing, a mechanism for deriving measurements of force exerted on the oarlock during the rowing, and a mechanism for deriving measurement of rowing power from the measurements of force and the measurements of angular displacement. The rowing-boat oarlock-installation may also comprises a power module, attached to the oarlock, which is responsive to rowing of the rowing-boat to derive force measurements in accordance with rowing forces exerted on the power module during the rowing.

  • Patent number: 9804268
Abstract: A display instrument 1 for a coxed rowing boat has a main-body 2 with a display head 3 displaying rowing-related measurements digitally at its front end, and a resilient partially-spherical extension 7 from its rear end. In the assembled instrument 1, the extension 7 is entered into an open-mouth 13 of a cup-receptacle 11 to be gripped resiliently surface-to-surface within a peripheral rim 14 of the mouth 13 so as to resists relative movement but allows manual adjustment of orientation of the main-body 2 relative to the receptacle 11 to facilitate the cox's view of the display. The receptacle 11 is entered in an aperture 16 of a dashboard 17 adjacent the cox's position 18 in the boat, and electronic circuitry of the instrument 1 is receptive of GPS signals to calculate boat and water-stream speeds for display.

  • Patent number: 8458926
Abstract: A rowing shoe (1) of adjustable length has a shell (2) divided into heel- and toe-sections (4, 9) carried by parts (6, 7) of an elongate chassis (5). The chassis-part (7) carrying the toe-section (9) slides on a head (21) of chassis-part 6 which is fixed to the foot-stretcher of the boat. A lever (30) pivoted on the chassis-part (7) projects forwardly from the toe-section (9) and has a slotted projection (29) engaged with one of a series of teeth (31) of the head (21) to restrain sliding of chassis-part (7). Depression of lever (30) releases the restraint by lifting projection (29) clear of the teeth (31), so allowing length-adjustment of the shoe (1) to a size indicated through a window (3) on an extension (24) of a plate (23) carried with the chassis-part (7). Release of the lever (30) allows the projection (29) to engage a tooth (31) and hold the adjusted size, urged by pressure of the rower's foot.

  • Patent number: 8407910
Abstract: A gauge (1) for rig-related measurements of a rowing boat involves a graduated slider (2) which is slidable longitudinally within a tube (3) that is parallel-mounted via pivoted links (6) on a bar (4). A head (9) of the slider (2) carries a laser (10) and is used with the bar (4) located in a seat-runner 21 to sight its beam B on the swivel-pin (24) or the face-of-work (27) of an oarlock (23). A reading of the slider-graduations is made and then again after the slider (2) has been extended with the head (9) turned down to bring the beam (B) onto the heel (25) of a rowing shoe (26) fixed in the boat. Difference between the readings gives the work-to-heel distance. Measurement of the distance-through-the-work is made from the swivel-pin (24) or face-of-work (27), to either the front end of the runners (21) or the front of the seat (22) when pushed fully forward.

  • Patent number: 7452252
Abstract: Operation of an electric microswitch 14 for timing or other purposes during rowing is brought about by the rower moving the heels 8 of his/her shoes 3 in opposite sideways directions transitorily. A unit 10 containing the switch 14 involves two plates 19,20 that are tied by cords 11 to the two heels 8 respectively within the foot-well 6 of the boat, so as to slide relative to one another against a spring bias when the heels 8 move apart. The microswitch 14 operates in response to the sliding to energize an LED 16 for sending a light pulse via fibre-optic cable 23 to a timing unit 24. A modified unit 10 includes a wireless transmitter 25 in place of the LED 16, and an alternative modification involves two parallel fibre-optic cables 26,27 from the unit 24 and an optical block 32.

  • Patent number: 6973739
Abstract: An instrument for measuring rigger-spread of a boat has an elongate casing 1 for support athwartships of the boat with a shoulder 2 of the casing 1 abutting the outside of the gunwale 4 opposite the rigger 5 and a slidingly-adjustable shoulder 6 abutting the opposite gunwale 9. A measuring tape 10 is extendable longitudinally from the casing 1 to the oarlock 14 of the rigger 5 to give a reading of spread, the extendable length being limited in dependence upon the spacing between the shoulders 2,6 of the casing 1 such that this length is increased or decreased by half the amount of any increase or decrease, respectively, of that spacing. Limitation of the extendable length involves a mechanism in which the two ends 18,19 of a flexible strip 15 or wire are secured respectively to the sliding shoulder 6 and the casing 1 so as to define a loop that is caught by a hook 16 of the tape 10 in limiting tape-extension.

  • Patent number: 6712244
Abstract: A dispensing device for dispensing a measured quantity of a concentrated cleansing liquid into a spray bottle or any other suitable receptacle, is provided with means for pumping the measured quantity of the liquid from a source into a holding reservoir. The dispensing device includes inhibiting means for preventing the interruption of a priming stroke as the liquid is pumped from the source into the reservoir and for preventing the interruption of a delivery stroke as the liquid is pumped from the reservoir to the receptacle. The inhibiting means includes a pivotable lever having an arcuate rib engaged by a pair of locking members arranged to engage opposite tracks of the arcuate rib.
