    Abstract: A rotation sensitive ring laser system comprising an optical loop including a polarizing beam splitter in the loop, the laser gain medium being outside the loop, and a quarter wave plate in the path of light emanating from the loop for converting the light into linearly polarized light, the plane of polarization of which is rotating at an angular rate proportional to the angular rate with which the system is rotating in inertial space.
