  • Patent number: 5820154
Abstract: A layer of low density elastomeric material is interposed between upper and lower segments of a ski, the layer and upper segment extending along at least 35% of the length of the lower segment. The elastomeric layer contains at least one insert of high density material disposed in a direction across the width of the ski, the insert being of greater density than the low density elastomeric material to provide torsional rigidity to a ski which otherwise has softened longitudinal flexibility and enhanced vibration damping.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 1, 1997
Date of Patent: October 13, 1998
    Inventor: John G. Howe
  • Patent number: 4275885
Abstract: The head of the tennis racket has an oblong, oval shape so that the strung ball hitting area has a length to width ratio of about 1.75:1.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 6, 1979
Date of Patent: June 30, 1981
    Assignee: AMF Incorporated
    Inventor: John G. Howe
  • Patent number: 4116054
Abstract: Apparatus for measuring the spring rate of the total string plane of a racket. A frame is provided for positioning the racket head. The frame supports a member which is movable towards the strings in a direction normal to its plane. A measuring device is interposed between the frame and the strings whereby when the strings are displaced from their normal plane as a result of movement of the member, the measuring device displays an indication representative of the strings' resistance to the displacement.

  • Patent number: 3964300
Abstract: The "bending stiffness" and camber of a ski are combined in a single integrated measurement by clamping the ski at its central portion to another surface and positioning a non-deflecting measuring device between the ski and the surface at a selected location intermediate the ski end and said central portion.
