  • Patent number: 5508189
Abstract: Guard cell isolation and culture to regenerate the parent plant. Guard cells are collected from leaves of a plant and isolated to yield a dense and pure guard cell protoplast suspension. Cultures derived from the suspension may be grown on callus medium with excellent results. Root and shoot propagation may be obtained from established guard cell callus. With the establishment of roots and shoots, an entire plant may be regenerated from its guard cells. Guard cells may also be cultured for transplant gene extraction as a gene donor used to alter the characteristics of the recipient plant.
