  • Publication number: 20200064995
Abstract: An electronic device includes a fingerprint sensor and one or more processors operable with the fingerprint sensor. One or more motion detectors are also operable with the one or more processors. The one or more processors determine with the fingerprint sensor, a direction of rotation of an object rotating, and in contact with, the fingerprint sensor. The one or more motion detectors detect whether the electronic device is rotating in three-dimensional space. The one or more processors then select and perform a first control operation when the object is rotating in a first axial direction and the electronic device is substantially stationary. Alternatively, the one or more processors select and perform a second control operation when the electronic device is rotating and the object is rotating in the first axial direction.

  • Patent number: 10523255
Abstract: A mobile electronic communications device performs millimeter wave antenna management for a plurality of mm-wave antennas using a respective plurality of sensor arrays, each having at least a thermal sensor and a capacitive sensor. The sensor arrays are used to determine whether a human presence exists within a sense distance of each of the sensor arrays and manage the usage of each mm-wave antennas based on whether a human presence exists within the sense distance of its associated sensor array.

  • Patent number: 10506170
Abstract: An electronic device has an imaging device (such as a still camera or video camera) and is capable of displaying a viewfinder on one side or multiple sides of the device. The device may determine the side or sides on which to display the viewfinder based on factors such as user input, object proximity, grip detection, accelerometer data, and gyroscope data. In one implementation, the device has multiple imaging devices and can select which imaging device to use to capture an image based on the above factors as well.

  • Patent number: 10353481
Abstract: An electronic device includes one or more processors, a motion detector, another motion detector, such as a gyroscope or one or more accelerometers, and one or more proximity detectors. An amount of movement of the electronic device, an amount of rotation about an axis, and whether an object is proximately located with a major face of the electronic device can be determined. A gesture lifting the electronic device occurring can be confirmed when the amount of movement exceeds a first predetermined threshold, the amount of rotation exceeds a second predetermined threshold, and the object is proximately located with the electronic device. Other factors, such as whether the motion was against a gravity direction and a final orientation of the electronic device can be considered as well. A control operation can occur in response to confirming the gesture.

  • Publication number: 20150241978
Abstract: An electronic device has multiple sides and multiple gesture sensors (such as infrared sensors) and can interpret gestures based on the movement detected by the gesture sensors. The device may interpret data from each of the gesture sensors as separate gestures, or may interpret the data from two or more of the sensors as one single gesture. The device may select which interpretation to use based on an angle between two or more sides of the device.

  • Publication number: 20150243202
Abstract: An electronic device has multiple sides. In some implementations, at least two of the sides are pivotable with respect to one another. The device may have a display that wraps from one side to the other. In some implementations, the device has multiple display drivers and each display driver is responsible for driving a different pixel region. The device may enable and disable one or more of the drivers based on an angle between the sides of the device. Two or more of the pixel regions may overlap, with one or more drivers being capable of driving the pixels of the overlapping region. The pixels or pixel regions that are enabled may be selected based on the angle between the sides of the device.

  • Patent number: 9063182
Abstract: A magnetic field sensor, such as a Hall effect sensor, and a corresponding magnetic field producing unit, such as a magnet, can be both positioned near a hinge of a hinged device, such that the magnet, in one part of the device, rotates around the Hall effect sensor, in another part of the device. Three positions can, thereby be detected: (1) when the device is closed and the magnet is “above” the sensor, (2) when the device is partially open and the magnet is “to the side” of the sensor, and (3) when the device is fully open and the magnet is “below” the sensor. The hinged device can have the hinge offset slightly to enable the magnet to rotate around the sensor as described. Alternatively, the locations of the magnet and sensor can be reversed.
