  • Patent number: 6004759
Abstract: Disclosed are compositions and methods for diagnosing autoimmune insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. In general, diagnostic methods of the invention include testing for the presence of an autoimmune immunoglobulin in a suspected patient's serum wherein the immunoglobulin is identified by its ability to interfere with the glucose transporting activity of a pancreatic islet cell glucose transporter. The inventors have discovered that the presence of such an autoimmune antibody in patient's serum is diagnostic of autoimmune insulin dependant diabetes mellitus. In particular aspects the diagnostic assay of the invention involves the incubation of isolated and dispersed islet cells, such as rat islet cells, in the presence of immunoglobulin obtained from the patient. Following such an incubation, the islet cells are tested for their ability to uptake glucose. A diagnosis is made through a determination that immunoglobulins in the serum of the patient specifically inhibit the uptake of glucose by the islet cells.

  • Patent number: 5628478
Abstract: Inductive pickups for sensing coded cab current information employ short ferrite cores and exhibit a pronounced roll-off characteristic to provide a detection system that may be used with locomotives powered by alternating current traction motors. Desired response is enhanced by connecting the inductors in phase in a tuned circuit and by employing a cancelling coil in phase opposition that receives interfering motor noise but is insensitive to the coded information.

  • Patent number: 5187818
Abstract: An apparatus and method for an improved flushing system for flushing a water closet from a pressurized water line includes sensor which senses an arrival and a departure of a person within a zone proximate the water closet. A controller is connected to the sensor for determining the existence of a low water volume flush condition and the existence of a high water volume flush condition. The low water volume flush condition exists when the sensor senses an elapsed time between the arrival and the departure of less than a preselected time interval. The high water volume flush condition exists when the sensor senses an elapsed time greater than the preselected time interval.

  • Patent number: 4939466
Abstract: A diesel engine exhaust system is provided with a particulate trap for collecting the products of incomplete combustion during the engine power cycle. A sensing mechanism including an electrode downstream of the trap and a signal generating circuit provides a positive indication of occurrence of regeneration of the trap. Charged particles generated during regeneration induce a charge of the electrode, that charge activates the signal generating circuit and it, in turn, produces an indication external of the exhaust system that trap regeneration is occurring. That indication can be in the operator's compartment.

  • Patent number: 4352051
Abstract: A single phase motor is disclosed which comprises a stator assembly having a main winding, a start winding and an auxiliary winding wherein the start and auxiliary windings are connected in two alternative configurations during start and run conditions, respectively. During the start condition, the start and auxiliary windings are interconnected by a series connection which causes current to flow through the auxiliary winding in a reverse direction to the flow through the start winding so that there exists a bucking magnetic relationship between the fields in the start and auxiliary windings. During the run condition of the motor, however, the start and auxiliary windings are interconnected by a second series electrical connection which causes the current to flow through the auxiliary winding in a direction opposite the first direction so as to cause the magnetic fields in the start and auxiliary windings to be in an aiding relationship thereby improving motor operating efficiency.
