Publication number: 20110169360Abstract: A transmission having an electric motor/generator includes a transmission housing and a bearing support rigidly connected to the transmission housing and substantially enclosed by the transmission housing. A stator housing is substantially enclosed by the transmission housing, and is rigidly joined to the bearing support by a plurality of rivets, such that torque may be transferred between the stator housing and bearing support. The stator housing may be formed from a first material, and the bearing support may be formed from a second material, different from the first material. The stator housing and bearing support meet at an interface region, which may be characterized by an absence of a welded connection between the stator housing and the bearing support. The interface region may be characterized as a slip fit, such that the stator housing and bearing support are matable by hand.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 12, 2010Publication date: July 14, 2011Inventors: Timothy J. Reinhart, Joel E. Mowatt, Randy Lewis Melanson, John H. Price

Patent number: 6983673Abstract: A transfer case for AWD/4WD vehicle that employs a bushing positioned within a transfer case housing. The bushing is formed to the housing when the housing is cast. The bushing includes one or more axial notches formed in an outer surface of the bushing that fill with the housing metal during the casting process that prevents the bushing from rotating in response to a load from a slip yoke. A helical groove is formed in the inner surface of the bushing and a slot is formed through a housing wall along the bushing that allows lubricant from within the housing to flow through the bushing.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2003Date of Patent: January 10, 2006Assignee: BorgWarner Inc.Inventors: Peter J. Bellich, Bryan D. McIntyre, Ray F. Hamilton, John H. Price, David R. Weilant, Ivan C. Poor, Jim Sells

Patent number: 5454289Abstract: Methods and apparatus related to design and construction of lightweight and mobile railgun barrels having high L' (inductance per unit length). The barrels comprise stacked metallic annular laminations in combination with prestressed tension elements to add radial and longitudinal stiffness. Laminations have elongated annular shapes to accommodate a plurality of longitudinal rails within the barrel, and the lamination shape is optimized to contain radial forces (tending to spread the rails) associated with the launching of railgun projectiles. Longitudinal stiffness is obtained from tension elements spirally wound around the barrel at a preferred angle with the barrel longitudinal axis. Radial stiffness is obtained by injecting a settable plastic fluid between barrel laminations and internal (bore) components, the latter being held as a subassembly with a longitudinal shrink tube.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 1993Date of Patent: October 3, 1995Assignee: Board of Regents, The University of Texas SystemInventors: James L. Patent number: 3941862Abstract: An assembly for diffusing gas in a humidifier comprises a base plate having a wall extending around its periphery, a diffuser sheet comprising a substantially gas impermeable membrane having a plurality of perforations and a member for directing gas to be humidified into a gas receiving chamber defined between the diffuser sheet and base plate. In a humidifier, the assembly is submerged in water and gas travels through the gas directing member, into the gas receiving chamber and outwardly through the perforations in the diffuser sheet into the water where it is humidified and exits from the humidifier.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1973Date of Patent: March 2, 1976Assignee: Hudson Oxygen Therapy Sales CompanyInventors: John H.
