  • Patent number: 4659324
Abstract: A centrifuge rotor is presented having a pivotal mount for a sample container upwardly offset from the radial plane of maximal strength of the rotor permitting a smaller diameter rotor container assembly and reducing exposed surface area of the rotor container assembly.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 4, 1984
Date of Patent: April 21, 1987
    Assignee: Beckman Instruments, Inc.
    Inventor: John H. Sutton, III
  • Patent number: 4548596
Abstract: A centrifuge rotor is claimed which comprises a rotor having a plurality of radially extending arms, having a construction to matably receive a pin structure within a recess formed in the upper surface of the rotor, to support the pin structure against loads generated by centrifugal force without stressing a fastener. In assembly, the pin structures permanently mount trunnions for receiving a sample container, for pivotal movement, in a manner such that the trunnion and sample container cooperate to resist stresses and deformation caused by centrifugal loads.

Inventors: John H. Sutton, III, Steven J. Chulay
  • Patent number: 4412830
Abstract: A cover having a free-turning knob in its center for use on the rotor of a centrifuge. The knob includes tool means for coupling the knob with a threaded fastener securing the rotor to a drive shaft. Thus, when the cover is positioned on the rotor, the threaded fastener securing the rotor can be tightened or loosened by a turning of the knob. The rotor can thereby be removed and replaced without the use of external tools.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: November 1, 1983
    Assignee: Beckman Instruments, Inc.
Inventors: David H. Strain, John H. Sutton, III
  • Patent number: 4375272
Abstract: A fixed angle tube carrier is provided for use with externally shouldered sample tubes and a centrifuge rotor having formed therein a plurality of symmetrically disposed vertical slots in its outer peripheral surface. The slots are formed in the shape of a "T" and adapted for sliding engagement with a tube carrier. The tube carrier comprises a vertically elongated member having a "T" shaped cross-section which is adapted for sliding engagement with the slots of the rotor. The carrier contains a plurality of circular recesses which are open at each end and adapted for holding an externally shouldered sample tube. The longitudinal axis of each recess is disposed radially of the vertical axis of the rotor and at an angle less than 90.degree. thereto.
