Patent number: 10399143Abstract: A method includes forming a mold, the mold having at least one mold portion defining the shape of an element to be removed from the component in a subsequent manufacturing step and having a reduced cross-sectional area. The at least one mold portion includes at least one recess which further reduces the cross sectional area of the cavity and increases the surface area of the at least one mold portion or the at least one mold portion includes a plurality of projections which increase the surface area of the least one mold portion thereby increasing radiative heat loss from the at least one mold portion during the process. A mold for use in this method and a turbine blade formed using this method, are also provided.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 2015Date of Patent: September 3, 2019Assignee: ROLLS-ROYCE plcInventors: John Harold Boswell, Terence Ivan Simpson, Phillip John Crosby

Patent number: 10035189Abstract: A method and apparatus for removing a canister 12 from a component 18 by forming an opening 30 in the canister wall thickness 14, 16 and introducing a pressurised fluid into the opening 14, 16 causing hydrostatic pressure build up between an internal canister surface 14 and the component 18, leading to the removal of the canister 12. This method and apparatus obviates the need to expend significant machining or chemical processing to remove the canister 12.Type: GrantFiled: September 3, 2014Date of Patent: July 31, 2018Assignee: ROLLS-ROYCE plcInventors: John Harold Boswell, Daniel Clark

Patent number: 9352412Abstract: A method of forming a bonded assembly (10). The method comprises: providing at least first and second parts (12, 14) of an assembly (10) to be bonded; assembling the first and second parts (12, 14) in a required relative position to define a bond interface region therebetween; sealing part way along an edge (18) of the bond interface region using laser beam welding to define a cavity between the first and second parts (12, 14); in a vacuum environment, sealing the remainder of the edge (20) of the bond interface region using electron beam welding to form a fluid tight seal around the cavity; and applying heat and pressure to an external surface of the cavity to diffusion bond the first and second parts (12, 14) together.Type: GrantFiled: January 16, 2014Date of Patent: May 31, 2016Assignee: ROLLS-ROYCE plcInventors: John Harold Boswell, Daniel Clark, Charles Richard Carpenter, Andrew Richard Kennedy

Patent number: 9095894Abstract: A casting arrangement for the single crystal casting of a component in which a common feed for molten metal is provided with a filtration arrangement that incorporates an annular filter. Outlets in a housing surrounding the filter direct the filtered molten metal on to a seed crystal and into a spiral grain selector.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 2010Date of Patent: August 4, 2015Assignee: ROLLS-ROYCE PLCInventors: John Harold Boswell, Kevin Goodwin, Andrew David Slater, Amanda Barbara Borland

Publication number: 20150083284Abstract: A method of forming a shaped article. The method comprises providing a pre-form 40 comprising a chromium molybdenum vanadium steel alloy, heat treating the pre-form to obtain a surface hardness of between 420 and 480 according to the Vickers hardness test, and, subsequent to the heat treating step, flow forming the pre-form 40 to shape the pre-form.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 3, 2014Publication date: March 26, 2015Inventors: Martin John RAWSON, John Harold BOSWELL, Martin TUFFS, George William WHITEHURST, Paul Owen HILL

Patent number: 7374400Abstract: A turbine blade arrangement comprises turbine blades which are secured in adjacent positions to a rotor disc with a cavity defined between root segments and platform segments. A flow deflector within the cavity is provided as an insert such that through a recessed portion coolant flow .from a coolant path is constrained to remain adjacent to a rim surface. By constraining the coolant flow to remain adjacent to the surface greater cooling efficiency is achieved. Inner surfaces of the deflector may also be coated with low emissivity materials to reduce radiant heat flux transfer. The flow deflector supports a damper member in association with the platform segments.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 2005Date of Patent: May 20, 2008Assignee: ROLLS-ROYCE plcInventor: John Harold Boswell
