Patent number: 8763957Abstract: Spacecraft transfer orbit operations include separating a spacecraft from a launch vehicle, while in a launch vehicle transfer orbit. The spacecraft includes a propulsion subsystem and a spacecraft controller that controls the spacecraft in a three-axis stabilized mode. With the spacecraft continuously in the three-axis stabilized mode, one or more orbit raising maneuvers are performed by firing either or both of a chemical thruster and an electric thruster firing. Any two consecutive orbit raising maneuvers are separated by a respective intervening coast period. While in the three-axis stabilized mode, the spacecraft does not rotate about any axis at a rate greater than 0.1 degree/sec and dumping of momentum stored in a reaction wheel system is avoided.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 2012Date of Patent: July 1, 2014Assignee: Space Systems/Loral, LLCInventors: John Higham, Scott Tilley

Patent number: 8416080Abstract: An RFID cabinet for monitoring items having an RFID tag includes a cabinet having at least one locking front door. An RFID detector is used for monitoring each item placed within the cabinet and is located within the interior of the cabinet. A computer is coupled to the RFID cabinet and controls opening and closing of the front door and is configured to receive an input that identifies the user. In this way, the computer is configured to periodically record data read from the RFID tags by the RFID detector.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 2009Date of Patent: April 9, 2013Assignee: Omnicell, Inc.Inventor: John Higham

Patent number: 6311929Abstract: A spacecraft having a body, one or more appendages coupled thereto, and a controller that implements methods that rotate the one or more flexible appendages to point it (them) towards the Sun to reduce spacecraft attitude pointing disturbances and improves spacecraft attitude pointing. The steps of the one or more appendages are timed to deadbeat the disturbance imparted to the spacecraft body. Timing of the appendage steps may be such that the periodic disturbances are phased to substantially cancel each other, or phased to decrease the magnitude of the net disturbance. The present invention also cancels solar array slew disturbances. The present invention cancels predictable disturbance torques before they produce a pointing error, improving the spacecraft pointing performance.Type: GrantFiled: November 26, 1999Date of Patent: November 6, 2001Assignee: Space Systems/Loral, Inc.Inventors: Fatima Kazimi, Keith Reckdahl, Tung Liu, Yat Fai Leung, John Higham

Patent number: 6012000Abstract: An onboard star tracking system is used to provide continuous attitude data based on a fixed star catalog. An orbital position reference for the sensed star data is estimated from uploaded data. The attitude is calculated based solely on the star sensor data referenced to the estimated orbital position and compared to mission attitude to generate an attitude adjustment.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 1998Date of Patent: January 4, 2000Assignee: Space Systems/Loral, Inc.Inventors: Thomas Joseph Holmes, Sun Hur-Diaz, Donald Gamble, John Higham
