Publication number: 20080168569Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention are directed to various high-throughput methods for identifying compounds that are useful for the treatment of various neurodegenerative diseases, including the Huntington's Disease (HD), Parkinson's Disease (PD), Alzheimer's Disease (AD), and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Methods and compositions of the present invention enable the exogenous expression of one or more neurodegenerative-disease-related polypeptide variants within the ocular lens of an animal host. The formation of aggregates containing neurodegenerative-disease-related polypeptide variants increases the opacity of the lens, in a manner similar to the development of age-onset cataracts. The effect of a test compound in decreasing aggregate formation and/or destabilizing aggregates that contain neurodegenerative-disease-related polypeptide variants can be visually monitored and quantified in living animal hosts by employing conventional cataract-detecting instrumentation and related methods.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 13, 2004Publication date: July 10, 2008Inventors: Paul J. Muchowski, John I. Clark

Patent number: 5719784Abstract: A system (10) is disclosed for use in detecting and analyzing cell and tissue microstructure as part of the diagnosis of a variety of pathological conditions, including cataracts, as well as aging, disease and certain traumatic events. The system includes a data input system (12), which may produce data regarding the microstructure to be evaluated either invasively or noninvasively. An electron microscope (20) may be employed to collect data regarding the microstructure of any tissue to be evaluated for the existence of a pathological condition. The system (12) also includes a computer (14) programmed to analyze the output of the data collection system by using signal processing techniques that are applicable to the data output characterizing the nonrandom microstructure. These techniques include fractal analysis, oscillatory analysis, and a modified Fourier/fractal analysis. The outcome of the signal processing is then compared to empirical data to effect a diagnosis.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: February 17, 1998Assignee: University of Washington at SeattleInventors: John I. Patent number: 4829568Abstract: A system for the metering of encrypted postage and similar indicia includes a device for printing such indicia and a device for reading such indicia. The printing is accomplished with a dot matrix printer driven by signals obtained by altering character generation signals with encryption signals. The interleaving is accomplished on a row-by-row basis by inserting delays from an encryption circuit into signals from a character generator circuit. The reading is accomplished by correlating received characters against a stored array of a symbols to determine the presence of a symbol, the extraction of coded data from character data of the received and identified character, and the comparison of the separated coded data with a reference code to determine the accuracy of the printed material. Thereby, forgery and alteration is inhibited.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 1986Date of Patent: May 9, 1989Assignee: Pitney BowesInventors: John I. Clark, Alton B. Eckert, David M. Warren

Patent number: 4701858Abstract: A circuit module for general use in microcomputer based systems, such as time-of-use electronic utility meters, which maintains realtime clock calendar information even through long term power outages of 12 hours or more without the use of batteries. Realtime computations are protected by combining a very low power realtime clock calendar integrated circuit with a large capacitor as a secondary power source. The circuit module provides a reference clock calendar for the associated microcomputer. The module includes a capacitor charging circuit deriving power from a primary power source, a crystal oscillator time base circuit and a memory read/write protect circuit. During a power failure the capacitor, which is disconnected from the primary power source, supplies to the module the necessary power to maintain valid realtime computations.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1984Date of Patent: October 20, 1987Assignee: Energy Optics Inc.Inventors: John H. Patent number: 4641347Abstract: A system for the metering of encrypted postage and similar indicia includes a device for printing such indicia and a device for reading such indicia. The printing is accomplished with a dot matrix printer and a bar-code printer driven by signals obtained by a character generator and an encryption circuit. The reading is accomplished by a bar-code reader and a dot matrix reader. Intelligence is obtained by correlating received characters against a stored array of symbols to determine the presence of a symbol, and the comparison of the separated coded data with a reference code to determine the accuracy of the printed material. Thereby, forgery and alteration is inhibited. The data and the encrypted material are imprinted by indicia utilizing both the formats of alphanumeric characters and the formats of a bar code.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 1983Date of Patent: February 3, 1987Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventors: John I. Patent number: 4565995Abstract: An anti-energy diversion system for mounting underneath the cover of a standard electric utility meter in order to sense common meter tampering events and indicate the occurrence of such events. A non-battery energy storage circuit extracts energy from the AC power line available in the meter to power the system even during power outages. A flashbulb associated with a heat sensitive indelible indicator is coupled to the energy storage circuit when any one of several tamper event sensor switches are closed. When a tamper event is sensed, a brilliant flash of light is discharged and the appearance of the indelible indicator is transformed.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 1983Date of Patent: January 21, 1986Assignee: Energy Optics, Inc.Inventors: John H. Patent number: 4493252Abstract: A postage meter system having a rotary printing drum for printing fixed data is disclosed. Disposed entirely within the drum is an internal print head for printing variable data. The rotary drum contains an opening therein through which the internally located print head prints variable data on a mailpiece. The print head reciprocates between a printing position and a non-printing position. The reciprocation of the print head between these positions is synchronized with and controlled automatically by the position of the rotary drum during its cycle of rotation. The print head operates to print on a mailpiece only when the opening in the drum is between the print head and the mailpiece. The print head may be an impact matrix print head which together with an associated inked ribbon is placed adjacent the mailpiece in a printing position only during the printing portion of the drum's cycle.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 1983Date of Patent: January 15, 1985Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventor: John I.
