Patent number: 5881808Abstract: A guide lug for a starting or window mill is provided at the upper end of the whipstock. A back-up shoulder is provided to act against any tendencies of the mill to whirl. A taper is provided for use in guiding the mill toward the casing for the cutting of the window. The lug is configured to be worn by a guide for the window mill or starter mill rather than being milled away. As a result of the use of the lug, the upper sections of the whipstock are protected from the mill. In turn, any holes or other projections provided for subsequent retrieval of the whipstock are functional for such a retrieval at the conclusion of the milling process for the window.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 1997Date of Patent: March 16, 1999Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Hans H. Rehbock, John J. Johnson

Patent number: 5678634Abstract: A retrieval tool for whipstocks is disclosed. A latch is retractable into the tool upon application of hydraulic pressure. A locking pin securely fastens the whipstock and retrieving tool together. The hydraulic pressure acts a cleaning force on the top of the whipstock and the retrieving slot to facilitate engagement. The offset stabilizer, when oriented opposite the lug on the retrieving tool, creates a force in the direction of the lug, whereby latching the retrieving tool will start. A joint of drillpipe or heavyweight drillpipe is run above the eccentric stabilizer. An offset stabilizer is provided to ensure proper initial orientation and avoid sticking the tool. The latch can firmly grip lugs within a slot in the whipstock. A overshot design is also disclosed using a similar hydraulically actuated latch assembly where the latch grabs the whipstock without having to use an opening therein, if for any reason the opening has been fouled with debris or damaged due to milling.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 1995Date of Patent: October 21, 1997Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Hans H. Rehbock, Gerald Lynde, Ed Lueders, Bryan Franklin McKinley, John J. Johnson, Greg Nazzal

Patent number: 5430439Abstract: A user of a selective call receiver (100) is capable of inputting and storing user defined search key information and user defined corresponding information into non-volatile memory (107), via user input control (109). Subsequent to receiving and decoding a message having message information and storing the message information into memory (106), the selective call receiver (100) is capable of searching the message information for an occurrence of the user defined search key information, and presenting the message information and at least a portion of corresponding information for an occurrence of corresponding user defined search key information in the message information.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 1993Date of Patent: July 4, 1995Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Paul W. Patent number: 5316863Abstract: A novel self-brazing aluminum laminated structure is described, as well as a method of making the laminated structure and a brazed product produced therefrom. The laminated structure consists of a thin layer of a powder mixture consisting of eutectic-forming metal powder and a flux powder sandwiched between an aluminum alloy sheet and an aluminum foil. The laminate is fabricated by roll bonding to provide adequate adhesion of the foil to the underlying sheet through and around the powder layer. This can be done by arranging the powder layer into clusters of powder with spaces therebetween so that roll bonding between the foil and the aluminum alloy substrate takes place by way of direct metal contact between the clusters. These clusters may be created by the method of applying the powder, e.g. silk screen, or by providing depressions in the surface of the substrate by a process of roughening or of embossing within which clusters of the powder are located.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 1992Date of Patent: May 31, 1994Assignee: Alcan International LimitedInventors: John J. Johnson, Roland S. Timsit

Patent number: 5218653Abstract: An apodized acousto-optic polarization converter in which two acoustic waveguides are (14, 20) are formed in a substrate and are separated by a small gap (18) such that the two acoustic waveguides act as a directional coupler in which acoustic power is transferred back and forth. An interdigitated transducer (12) launches a surface acoustic wave in the first acoustic waveguide, and an optical waveguide is formed in the middle of the second waveguide. An acoustic absorber (26) is formed over both acoustic waveguides at a distance from the transducer such that the acoustic wave is transferred from the first to the second waveguide and back again. Thereby, the optical signal in the optical waveguide is exposed to an acoustic power density that slowly increases to a maximum and then decreases with the result that the side lobes of the frequency spectrum for the converted signal are greatly reduced.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 1991Date of Patent: June 8, 1993Assignee: Bell Communications Research, Inc.Inventors: John J. Johnson, David A. Smith

Patent number: 4562854Abstract: An injection valve for injecting chemicals into a well which is actuated by a piston having an upwardly and a downwardly directed metal cup seal with a resilient seal therebetween and a gas pressure charge above the piston acting to close the injection valve. Oil may be provided in the body between the gas charge and the piston for acting as a barrier. The gas charge may be placed in a closed gas container having a rupturable portion with a piercing means for opening the container. The container may include oil.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 1984Date of Patent: January 7, 1986Assignee: Camco, IncorporatedInventors: Ronald E. Pringle, Arthur J. Morris, John J. Johnson

Patent number: 4492415Abstract: Novel, unitary, full complement bearing components are described which comprise a plurality of rolling elements embedded in a solid, self-supporting lubricating matrix with at least one arcuate operative surface of each rolling element exposed for rolling contact with another bearing component, the rolling elememts being in side-by-side contact or only slightly spaced from each other, and the matrix being composed of a gel obtained by thermally curing a mixture of lubricating oil and a high molecular weight polymer, and being capable of exuding lubricating oil under sliding friction in operation after insertion of the bearing component into a bearing structure in a single assembly operation. Full complement as used herein means a cageless rolling element bearing with a maximum number of rolling elements wherein no additional rolling elements can be added to the complement of rolling elements and wherein the rolling elements are in side-by-side relation.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1982Date of Patent: January 8, 1985Assignee: SKF Industries, Inc.Inventors: George H. Baile, John J. Johnson
