  • Publication number: 20170290783
Abstract: There is provided an exemplary method of treating weaning piglets to induce weight gain, or to prevent a reduction in rate of weight gain, the method comprising exposing the weaning piglets to a rabbit maternal pheromone having an interomone effect. In an exemplary embodiment, the rabbit maternal pheromone is trans-2-methyl-2-butenal. The method may include the step of applying the rabbit maternal pheromone to a feeder for the weaning piglets. Moreover, the rabbit maternal pheromone may be applied to a feeder (or to the feed) for the weaning piglets at least once during a first week of weaning. Further, the method may include weighing the weaning piglets at intervals to determine a rate of weight gain, and measuring an amount of feed consumed by the weaning piglets to calculate the amount of weight gained per unit of feed consumed.

  • Patent number: 9521829
Abstract: A livestock identification system/method configured to identify individual animals from a pool of livestock is disclosed. The system/method utilizes images of individual animals and determines the identity of a specific animal based on markers extracted from the image of the animal. These markers may then be used to characterize the state of the animal as to weight, health, and other parameters. The system is configured to log these parameters in a temporal database that may be used to determine historical activity of the animal, including but not limited to activity relating to food and/or fluid intake. This historical record in conjunction with analysis of the animal state parameters is used to determine the animal health status and may also be used to determine whether the animal is ready for harvesting.

  • Publication number: 20160296536
Abstract: There is provided a method of treating a weaning piglet with a cortisol agonist where the method includes administering a dose of the cortisol agonist to the weaning piglet, in a therapeutically effective amount, to cause an increase in body mass as compared to a like weaning but untreated piglet. The cortisol agonist may be dexamethasone. Further, the dose may range from about 0.1 mg/kg body mass to about 1.0 mg/kg of body mass, administered via intra-muscular injection. In a particular exemplary embodiment, the method includes administering a dose of 0.2 mg/kg body mass via intra-muscular injection. The method may include administering a first dose before weaning, and administering a second dose after weaning. Further, the first dose may be administered a day before commencing weaning, and the second dose 3 days after weaning has commenced.
