    Abstract: An apparatus for placing particles onto a substrate, methods for using the apparatus to deposit particles on a substrate and substrates prepared using the apparatus are disclosed. The apparatus includes a rotary screen, a blade disposed for directing and urging the particles through the screen, and a sheet mounted in a position to receive the particles from a feeder and deliver the particles to the rotary screen substantially across the blade. The apparatus can include a frame on which a rotary screen is rotatably mounted and a feed system disposed within and extending substantially along the length of the screen for distributing the particles. The apparatus can optionally include a vacuum means, an anti-static means and/or collection pans for handling stray particles. The screen can include a series of openings in the form of a pattern, and can be used to place particles in a pattern in register with a design or pattern on a substrate as the substrate passes under the openings in the screen.

    Abstract: A rotary batch-type grinding mill for processing powder is provided with an improved system for discharging material under seal from the atmosphere. The discharge system comprises a sealable collection chute having a banana-like configuration secured on the mill shell at an outlet port in the shell and extending substantially parallel to the circumference of the shell, a grate which prevents discharge of the grinding media from the mill during unloading of material from the mill and an elastomeric faced sealing plate which covers the grate during operation of the mill. The sealing plate is operated from outside the sealed system so that discharge from the mill can be effected without breaking the seal and the sealing plate is so disposed that in the open position it does not interfere with the flow of powder out of the mill.

    Abstract: A batch-type rotary grinding mill operable under seal to the atmosphere is provided with a discharge system which permits discharge of material from the mill under seal and without disturbing the seal in the mill. The discharge system comprises at least one discharge chute which is sealably secured to the shell wall, spiraling adjacent to the shell and traversing the shell wall from one end to the other. The material is discharged from the discharge chute via a hollow trunnion which, preferably, contains a conveyor to aid in passing the material out of the mill into an environmentally protected device.
