    Abstract: A physical vapor deposition apparatus for coating a substrate that includes a substrate holder that receives the substrate and a coating material source that emits a divergent stream of coating material. The divergent stream of coating material includes a diverse portion of coating material and a directed portion of coating material. The apparatus further includes a blinder means, positioned to be in operative engagement with the coating material source, for receiving and impacting the divergent stream of coating material so that the directed portion of coating material continuously exits the blinder means traveling generally toward the substrate holder. The directed portion of coating material exhibits less divergence than the divergent stream of coating material.

    Abstract: A cutting insert which includes a holder that contains a pocket and a hard insert that has a rake surface. The hard insert is contained within the pocket so as to present a cutting edge. The cutting insert also includes a chipbreaker which comprises a plate with a bottom surface. The chipbreaker is attached to the cutting insert (or optionally to the holder) so that the plate is spaced above the rake surface of the hard insert a first distance forming a conduit for passage of the chips away from the cutting insert. The conduit is defined at least in part by the rake surface of the cutting insert and the bottom surface of the chipbreaker plate.

    Abstract: A zirconium alloy fuel cladding tube is provided, having a uniform composition throughout and an outer annular microstructural layer in a cold worked and stress relieved condition over an inner annular microstructural layer in an essentially fully recrystallized condition.Also described is a method of producing this tubing. This method utilizes an intermediate annealing step in which cold worked tubing is nonuniformly annealed to produce an outer annular layer of essentially fully recrystallized material over an inner layer of cold worked and stress relieved material. Subsequently the nonuniformly annealed material is cold worked and then uniformly annealed to produce the fuel cladding tube described above.
