Patent number: 9032173Abstract: A method according to one embodiment includes receiving instruction to change from an original target storage subsystem in a disaster recovery configuration-to a new target storage subsystem. Second copy services relationships are created between one or more new target volumes on the new target storage subsystem and one or more source volumes on a source storage subsystem using multi-target functionality. Existing first copy services relationships between the source storage subsystem and the original target storage subsystem are terminated after all of the second copy services relationships are full duplex.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 2014Date of Patent: May 12, 2015Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Amy N. Blea, David R. Blea, Gregory E. McBride, John J. Wolfgang

Patent number: 8380686Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for copying data from a primary storage facility to a secondary storage facility which reduce the workload on the storage controller in the primary facility and minimize bandwidth usage. The primary storage facility includes a primary data replication appliance which transfers data to a secondary replication appliance. Updated data from a host is both stored through a storage controller in the primary facility and also received by the primary replication appliance. Logic in the primary replication appliance determines whether the immediately previous version of the data is in a buffer from a previous storage operation. If so, the current (updated) version of the data is compared with the previous version and the difference, such as calculated through a bit-wise exclusive-OR operation, is transferred to the secondary replication appliance.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2005Date of Patent: February 19, 2013Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: John J Wolfgang, Kenneth F Day, III, Philip M Doatmas, Henry E Butterworth, Carlos F Fuente

Patent number: 8200914Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for a read-before-write storage controller instruction. A sequencer receives an atomic read-before-write instruction comprising new data, a target address for the new data, and an undo log address. An I/O unit reads old data from the target address, writes the old data and the target address to the undo log address, and writes the new data to the target address as directed by the sequencer.Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 2008Date of Patent: June 12, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Kenneth W. Boyd, Kenneth F. Day, III, Amiram Hayardeny, Michael E. Factor, John J. Wolfgang

Patent number: 8095827Abstract: A method for replicating a volume of data including selecting a target storage box to receive a physical copy of the actual volume of data stored on the source storage box for replication of the actual volume of data, selecting a point in time storage box to receive a physical copy of actual data stored on the target storage box, physically copying actual data stored on the target storage box to the point in time storage box, performing the replication of the actual volume of data by initiating the physical copying on the target storage box of the actual volume of data, and selectively undoing the physical copying on the target storage box of the actual volume of data by replacing the current actual data stored on the target storage box with the physical copy of actual target storage box data stored on the point in time storage box.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 2007Date of Patent: January 10, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: David R. Patent number: 8027951Abstract: A system, backup components and computer program product are provided to improve the efficiency of the transmission of consistency groups across multiple storage components by ensuring that volume transactions are evenly allocated among backup components. Each volume is initially assigned to a specified backup component. Once a color period begins, volume transactions are transmitted to the assigned backup component. Each backup component accumulates data transfer information for its assigned volumes throughout at least a portion of the color period and calculates a new volume assignment for the next color period. Before the start of the next color period, a captain storage controller transmits any new assignments to the backup components. During a next color period, the process is repeated using the new assignments.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 2008Date of Patent: September 27, 2011Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Philip M. Doatmas, Kenneth F. Day, Kenneth W. Boyd, John J. Wolfgang
