Patent number: 8311979Abstract: An automated system displays enables a user to observe the activities in a system based on information in the display. From this display, the user can quickly identify the source of problems for the purpose of troubleshooting without the need to manually determine the source and nature of the problem. In this system, data about the system is gathered through a plurality of agents positioned throughout the network. This data is analyzed and a system monitor deployment configuration is developed. This monitor deployment information along with information about the various devices in the system and any relationships of devices in the system are imported to the display system. The display system then displays this information showing the present relationships of the devices in the system.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 2011Date of Patent: November 13, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: John Jason Auvenshine, Justin C. Blackburn, Christopher Joel Jacoby, Edward Fosdick Nicolas

Patent number: 7970896Abstract: Provided are a system and article of manufacture for filtering communications received from over a network for a person-to-person communication program. A communication is received for the person-to person communication program. The communication is processed to determine predefined language statements. Information on the determined language statements is inputted into a neural network to produce an output value. A determination is made as to whether the output value indicates that the communication is unacceptable. The communication is forwarded to the person-to-person communication program unchanged if the output value indicates that the communication is acceptable. An action is performed with respect to the communication upon determining that the communication is unacceptable that differs from the forwarding of the communication that occurs if the output value indicates that the communication is acceptable.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 2008Date of Patent: June 28, 2011Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: John Jason Auvenshine

Patent number: 7398434Abstract: A system, method and program for troubleshooting a problem with an application. An application server which is supposed to be executing the application and a database or a server which manages the database are identified. The application, when executing, obtains data from the database to respond to a client request. The application server, database or database server, and a connection between the application server and the database or database server are generated and displayed or printed. Also, one or more hyperlinks to automatically send a hardware, software, or network status inquiry to the application server to test operability of the application server and/or a connection to the application server and automatically send a hardware, software, or network status inquiry to the database server to test operability of the database server and/or a connection to the database server are generated and displayed or printed.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 2007Date of Patent: July 8, 2008Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: John Jason Auvenshine, Justin Christopher Blackburn, Christopher Joel Jacoby

Patent number: 6725238Abstract: Disclosed is a method, system, and program for accessing a shared file system that is accessible to a first computer. The shared file system includes files in at least one file format compatible with at least one application program installed on the first computer. A request is received from an Internet browser program executing on a second computer for an applet over the Internet. The applet is transmitted to the browser program at the second computer. The applet is capable of executing in the browser program at the second computer to display a desktop interface at the second computer and establish a connection with the shared file system. The applet further provides access to at least one desktop application program through the desktop interface that is compatible with at least one application program installed on the first computer system. The desktop application program manipulates files in the same file format as the at least one application program installed on the first computer system.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 2000Date of Patent: April 20, 2004Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: John Jason Auvenshine

Patent number: 6633855Abstract: Disclosed is a method, system, and program for filtering a data object for content deemed unacceptable by a user. A data object requested by a viewer program is received. The data object is processed to determine predefined language statements. Information on the determined language statements is inputted into a neural network to produce an output value. A determination is then made as to whether the output value indicates that the data object is unacceptable. Viewer program access to the data object is inhibited upon determining that the data object is unacceptable.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 2000Date of Patent: October 14, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: John Jason Auvenshine

Patent number: 6542930Abstract: A computer-driven file management technique is applied to a distributed file system with multiple storage “aggregates” to improve file distribution, user access, server workload, and the like. For a first aggregate, a recognition module analyzes file contents of all aggregates, plans a set of physical data movement operations to configure data stored upon a first one of the aggregates according to certain prescribed “goals,” and buffers the planned physical data movement operations. The planned set of physical data movement operations constitute a “virtual” data move. The reviewing, planning, and buffering operations are repeated for all remaining aggregates in the distributed file system. However, each repeated reviewing operation considers the file contents of the aggregates as if all previous virtual data moves had actually been performed. Asynchronously with the storage analysis and reconfiguration planning, the system processes the action buffer.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 2000Date of Patent: April 1, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: John Jason Auvenshine
